Is it normal not to see posts
  • In addition to the federation issues, make sure your language settings are correct. If you haven't included both your spoken languages and "Undetermined" in the language settings, then the UI will not display posts for the options you're missing

Any arguments against separating identity from instance/platform? (single identity across the fediverse)
  • Yep, it was one of his posts referring to implementing his existing approach to AP that I was thinking off!

Why would someone desire a pension instead of a 401k?
  • In Australia, pensions are government issued, but relatively low paying. Superannuation (similar to a 401k) is paid by your employer as a percentage of your pay each year, but generally managed by a dedicated superannuation company. Those companies can and have gone bust, taking their payees funds with them

Every show with a suicide now has a disclaimer with a suicide hotline at the beginning. Is there any evidence that these warnings make a positive difference?
  • I've lost too many people in my life to suicide, and it's a really hard topic for me to watch on screen.

So even though I've got no use for a hotline, just knowing that the show will center suicide as a theme is important to me being able to decide if/when to watch it.

What should have hindered you when you were younger but ended up being a positive part of your growth?
  • I can answer the question the other way around. What should have helped me but ended up hindering me?

University. I had undiagnosed ADHD, and 2E gifted student syndrome, so I went in to university with the world at my feet, only to fall hard. I never finished university, and ended up with a debt that took me years to pay off, and a complete loss of self confidence

Celebrities will never adopt the Fediverse until usernames are centralized.
  • If I was making my living off of my name, I wouldn't even know some random user with no followers from a troll domain exists.

Whatever the reason celebs don't take to the fediverse, this isn't it...

  • That's why she hosts her own domain, instead of sending half a million followers to some random fediverse instance.

How much money would it take for you to never listen to your favourite artist again?
  • Not much. Most of my listening is done via "random" streams or the radio at work.

[Answer to yesterday's question] The number of active users on join-lemmy.org is now back to normal
  • So, in its current form, lemmy sends federation packets in serial form. It can send them to multiple instances in parallel, but the feed between any two given instances is serial.

And serial means that the second packet doesn't get sent until the first packet has been processed. Add in geographic latency, which is relevant at multiple steps of resolving any given AP packet, which adds to the per packet processing time, and now, lemmy.world is producing packets faster than it's possible for a geographically remote instance to process them, no matter what hardware they're running on.

The problem would be resolved with parallel sending, but that's not currently a thing that lemmy allows for, and apparently, is not trivial to implement either.

  • Nicolás Mihanovich, an abandoned cruise ship sits moored on the bank of Rio Iguazú, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, at the apex of the borders between Argentina, Paraguay and Brasil.

It was originally designed as a luxury ferry between Argentina and Uruguay, but plans were made to turn it in to a floating Casino. The plans stalled, and now the ship sits, largely abandoned

[Answer to yesterday's question] The number of active users on join-lemmy.org is now back to normal
  • lemmy.world is so big that it breaks federation to geographically distant lemmy instances. Driving more users to it wouldn't help anyone and defeats the purpose of decentralisation.

TIL: males have 25% more neurons in the visual cortex than females
  • Yes, absolutely. But as I said, it's probably not as clear cut as whether you're XX or XY, because there are other factors that can also impact hormone levels and sensitivity to hormones

TIL: males have 25% more neurons in the visual cortex than females
  • I'm curious about this. They say that it's related to in utero exposure to androgens, which means it's probably not as clear cut as XX vs XY, because intersex folk and folk with atypical hormonal exposure (such as fraternal twins of different sexes, with a shared placenta) experience different levels of exposure, and different reactions to that exposure.

TIL: males have 25% more neurons in the visual cortex than females
  • So, for XX folk, the increased colour differentiation comes from fact they carry two sets of genes that encode for colour detection, and because they don't encode identically, each set creates a ever so slightly different perception of colour. And when you get two similar, but non identical perceptions of colour, you see more hues
