You really have no idea.
Drinking enough will make you overdose, it's called alcohol poisoning and can be fatal. This isn't really any different to other substances you can overdose on. There are some substances where a fatal overdose has never happened in fact, THC and LSD being notable examples. I don't know about you but I consider death to be pretty show stopping for me. Obviously if your some supernatural entity or something it might not be a huge deal for you.
As for effect length: how many drugs do you think take longer than 24 hours to stop being high? There are some that have long legs don't get me wrong, but they are the minority. Some substances such as DMT and Ketamine actually last a shorter time than alcohol, and have less after effects like a hangover. In fact a bad alcohol hangover can easily last longer than 24 hours after imbibing. Alcohol withdrawal for serious addicts lasts quite a while too, up to a couple weeks I think, and can also be fatal if not treated correctly.
All you are doing here is proving you don't understand how drugs work nor do you have practical experience by the sounds of it. I would argue if you don't understand how drugs work you shouldn't be allowed to set policy on them. Uninformed opinions are dangerous.
Unfortunately some people have no idea women like this actually exist and need to be told that drug use is a part of normal suburban life. Though to be honest I am kind of against the idolisation of suburbs, they are really inefficient, but I digress. Articles like this help break down the stigma around this kind of drug. A stigma that makes little sense as well given their safety profile and effectiveness in treating some illnesses like treatment resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
I don't particularly commend the women, nor the news outlet, for coming out about this though; it is still very much technically illegal by current law. But, I also do agree that the stigma attached to drug use, even when done so responsibly, is in fact ridiculous and stupid in general. However, I don't see a better way of achieving what that does...so I couldn't suggest any better alternatives and I don't support going back to a previous era in Law where drugs that factually are provably dangerous, for some reason, are not regulated. Reasonable and Sensible Regulations on dangerous Drugs are REQUIRED; it's just that some people have a different definition of 'Reasonable and Sensible' which has to be ironed into a proper consensus for society.
We should start with the most dangerous drug in our society: alcohol.
Oh wait the Americans tried that and it actually made things worse. Shocking.
Drug prohibition doesn't and has never worked. We also know neither voters nor politicians understand nor follow scientific consensus on drugs. Not popular consensus. Scientific consensus. Very different things unfortunately.
Look up any ranking of drug harms published by scientists. You might honestly be shocked. Things that people consider safe like alcohol normally end up being ranked much higher than other things commonly thought of as dangerous like nicotine or amphetamines. As much as smoking is bad there is way too much focus on it compared to alcohol and some other stuff. I know there are even some people that think of cocaine as being relatively normal and safe because of its overall popularity, yet if you actually look into it it's not healthy at all.
You're the one making an argument here. So you're the one who should be doing research. Yet it seems I've done more research than you in this conversation.
My views are based on data from my own country. If that situation is that bad in Los Estados Unidos then leave. In my country the average lecturer salary is a bit over £40k per year which is above the average UK salary for all age groups. That again is for lecturers which are not the same as professors.
You still haven't said what their salary actually is, just vaguely talked about hourly rates. Shouldn't most lectures be full time employees? Are you saying most lectures aren't full time in your country?
Edit: In the UK we actually have a dedicated visa for people with certain skills and qualifications like your academics. So if you wanted to move here you probably could: https://www.gov.uk/global-talent-researcher-academic
If this is Los Estados Unidos then it's not surprising something is wrong. I still sincerely doubt what these guys are saying though. I suspect a lot of them either mismanaged their money badly or are just straight up lying. Nobody would work in academia in that country if things were that bad at every University.
See this actually makes sense, but it is also entirely their own fault. You should only ever do a PhD if you're getting paid to do it by being sponsored by a company or from a scholarship fund. That's how I ended up doing my PhD. The kinds of people taking our loans to become a PhD probably shouldn't be doing a PhD in the first place. It's not like an undergraduate degree.
I am telling you that even people further down in the hierarchy make good money. Either your academics are lying to you (which wouldn't suprise me people are fucking greedy) or something has gone very wrong in your country. If we are talking about American it's probably both of those things.
Yes except lecturers also make bank.
The only people not making good money are the PhD students who also teach. Even then most of us I think get more money than the undergraduates.
Even I as a student get something like £19,000 a year plus £40 per hour teaching rate for any classes I teach.
Either these people are manipulating you or there is something very wrong with academia in your country. Luckily moving countries is quite easy for academics as many Universities will hire foreign staff and there are often immigration laws in place for these kinds of people.
In what world or country are professors not making enough to afford somewhere to live? In my country professors make good money despite the fact that tenure doesn't really exist here. It's one of the highest ranks you can have in academia above lecturer, senior lecturer, and reader.
I know some.of those names but have no idea what these people have done. Could you explain?
Someone using Linux Mint would be a good guess as I don't think they default to Google.
Then you use DuckDuckGo like I do. Not every search engine has gone to complete shit. Google was just an example. Obviously it's not the current meta in terms of search engines.
Are you honestly telling me there aren't people asking basic questions that could be solved with a google search? Don't get me wrong the kind of question you are talking about does exist, but that's now what I am discussing here.
I live in Europe, in a country that still has its problems. The truth is though it's not just us. There are less deaths from war and less poverty throughout the world in general if you actually look at the statistics. This is despite all the bad things you see in the news. The modern news and internet make people more aware of the bad in the world, when the truth is things are actually getting better overall.
Aside from global warming the world as a whole has been steadily improving. I think you are confusing the USA with the rest of the world. Empires collapse, it happens, that doesn't mean the whole world is on fire.
I don't think you have interpreted that correctly. People tend to reinstall when changing versions, for example from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04. That isn't the same as doing updates.
Honestly if you are that worried about updates breaking stuff, you might be better off using an immutable distro. These work using images and/or snapshots so it's easy to rollback if something goes wrong. It's also just less likely to go wrong as you aren't upgrading individual packages as much, but rather the base system as a whole. Both Fedora and Open Suse have atomic/immutable variants with derivatives like Universal Blue providing ready to go setups for specific use cases like gaming and workstation use.
Alternatively the likes of Debian rarely break because of updates as everything is thoroughly tested before deployment. Gentoo and void are the same deal but in rolling release format so they are at least somewhat up to date while still being quite well tested.
Yeah unfortunately this is a real issue. I also think it's an issue that experienced users don't really want to help newbies, especially those who can't or won't do research by themselves. Ideally experienced users would be more helpful, but at the same time that isn't their job. There are many who learned Linux more or less on their own so it's understandable they don't want to help given they didn't use any help when it was their turn. I think now that the community is growing this might start to change a bit, as the newcomers are more likely to have had help and be willing to help others.
I sometimes try to advocate for using Linux, and I don't mind giving friends advice from time to time. That being said I don't want to be stuck answering stupid questions all the time that could have been solved with a google search or a YouTube video. I have my own stuff to worry about both technical and otherwise.
That's why I think teaching new users how to access resources like man pages, gnu info pages, google, and so on is the correct approach to take. It is empowering having the skills to work through your own issues. That being said I also think it's important for experienced people to give advice on more complex questions.
What made you think that?
I am having audio issues on NixOS. I have tried enabling all firmware. I've also tried both pipewire and pulseaudio. The audio is confirmed working on CachyOS live image.
Here is the error message found in the system log:

Here is configuration.nix
I created a hyprland and waybar configuration using nix, and neither seem to actually apply. Why is this happening?

I am looking for a YouTube alternative client, where I can ideally import my subscriptions, and possible even like or comment on a Linux computer. Does such a thing exist?
First off I am in England in the UK, so that's the medical system I would probably be using.
I've had significant issues with executive function throughout my life, but especially in the last two years of my integrated masters degree. This includes organization, as well as staying focused. I've had issues with losing things, multitasking, procrastinating, racing thoughts, and other issues in the other areas of life as well. I am thinking of going back to do a PhD or starting my first full time job, and am worried that I will really struggle this time.
I got a diagnosis of Asperger's before you could officially have a dual diagnosis under the DSM. So even though some of initial paperwork said I had significant evidence of ADHD, I couldn't actually be diagnosed with both so I guess Asperger's took precedence. This all happened when I was like 4 or 5 years old.
I am thinking medications or maybe therapy might be helpful, but I don't know if I need the second diagnosis to get those. From what I understand the NHS (UK public health system) has long wait times, and going private might be expensive. Additionally going to a psychologist, and talking about stuff with my family seems scary.
Additionally I have issues with sleeping and waking that probably won't help get all of this organized, and I probably need to get this addressed too. I understand that both ASD and ADHD can cause sleep issues, so maybe getting treatment for those would help.
Sorry for the long post. I hope this is also the right community for this as I wasn't sure where to post this.
Edit: I also have hyperfixation/hyperfocus/special interests out the waazoo, but I didn't know if this was relevant as that's also a part of having autism.
I am looking for a way to play HDR content on Linux. From what I understand KDE 6 has experimental support for HDR, but isn't available on Pop OS 22.04. Apparently Cosmic desktop will support HDR when it's released, but I don't know if the experimental version will.
Can anybody help me here? Will I need to change distro?
Is there a way to move distro without loosing data in /home? I am currently running Pop OS and want to move to Nix OS while keeping the data. Normally I could use an external hard drive or my server, but most of my equipment is in storage at the moment. Current partition setup is using LUKS and LVM with ext4. I am guessing there is a way to manipulate the LVM to make it work by adding another partition and installing into it.
I know this is probably a convoluted idea. I am trying to avoid spending money an another external drive.
I am finding it difficult to fill in forms made with MS Word in LibreOffice. The formatting seems to end up all wrong among other things, and LibreOffice feels slow and clunky to use.
I've tried OnlyOffice, but it tends to crash and be slow as well.
At this moment in time I am trying to get MS Office 2010. Is there a better solution?
How do I fix my home dir with nix? It seems I have messed something up and now I can't install home manager. Anytime I try to install a package with nix-env it gives this error too:
error: this derivation has bad 'meta.outputsToInstall'
I have a calibre server setup on my home server and was wondering how to sync it to the version on my desktop so I can upload books to an ereader using USB.
Trying to figure out how to setup an aria2 server. It seems to rely on XDG dirs which isn't normally setup on LXC containers. I don't want to setup a whole GUI VM just for one application.
I have been having issues using real debrid. One of the big issues is downloads getting stuck continuously retrying. I think this is because I am using 5G internet that has issues with latency and occasional packet loss. Similarly I get buffering issues when using Stremio.
Another problem I am having is with the permission set by the real debrid client if I use the docker version. It doesn't allow for changing the UID and GID the real debrid process uses. This causes problems for the other services, though I can work around this using a manual installation in an LXC container.
Does anyone with more experience know how to fix this?
Edit: I can't edit the title to fix the spelling. You will just have to deal.
Edit2: Fixed the permission issues. Also managed to work out that the problem isn't 5G. The download client is just bad. Apparently you can use external downloaders, but this requires deploying services like aria2c, which it turns out is actually quite hard.
I am a bit lost as to how you use authentik to do single sign on.
I can connect things that have external access quite easily using the reverse proxy provider that's built into authentik. I am struggling with how I would connect things that are on a docker network and can't be accessed directly. Normally with nginx proxy manager I would put it on the same network, but I don't think this is correct for authentik. Am I supposed to create a docker outpost?
Other people are using authentik + nginx proxy manager and I am a bit lost why they are doing that.
I am currently living with my parents and we have just started an Internet contract with a 5G wireless company.
The issue is the MFND settings are behind a password and likely not allowed access by the ISP. Even if they weren't doing port forwarding on 5G likely isn't possible because of CGNAT. I think I can use cloudflare tunnels or tailscale to get around this, and not many things need to be directly accessible from the Internet.
The more annoying thing is that setting DHCP reservations likely isn't possible without getting access to the settings. It's going to make setting up static IPs difficult too.
Before anyone asks fixed line Internet almost certainly isn't practical in this area. Getting our own modem while possible is more expensive and potentially difficult, and would mean cancelling the contract.
Is there a reasonable way to work around these issues?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Hello based people of lemmy,
I have recently started trying out BSDs as an alternative to Linux and found out that Spotify isn't supported. Before you say try it in a browser this doesn't work as spotify has DRM that doesn't work on BSD OSes.
Now is there a way to stream music similar to Spotify? I know there is a downloader program available.
Furthermore do you know what self-hosted options are available? I already have a basic *arr stack and am always up for convoluted server and Linux hijinks.
I am having issues with Jellyfin not finding ffmpeg on FreeBSD. Is there any solution to this?
I have been struggling to stabilise things in my last few brewing attempts. I had been using a combination stabiliser (sorbate and sulfite) from the department store Boyes. It doesn't seem to work.
I know have sorbate powder and I already had campden tablets. I am wondering how you dose them correctly. From what I understand it's dependant on the ABV and the pH. Is there an easy way to calculate this? I take it there is no easy and cheap way to do a free SO2 test.
I am begging to think buying a sous vide and doing pasteurization is easier and more reliable at this point.
I've setup proxmox, and switched to the community repos.
The issue is the kernel it's now running doesn't have a headers package in said community repos. This means I can't install nvidia drivers properly. I can only install older kernel versions and headers. I tired removing the newer kernel and it tried to remove proxmox-ve meta package.
Do I need to remove proxmox-ve package and install community version or like what?
Chinese ROMs come without support for many languages. Even when using English there are still things which are in Chinese.
The people selling the devices on AliExpress are selling then with a "global rom". The issue here is that the rom doesn't exist officially. So no updates are available and you don't know what's actually inside it.
xiaomi.eu provide a modified version of the Chinese rom with language support and some other things. The issue is they charge for this through patreon for any mediatek devices. You have to keep paying if you want security updates. This is immoral and probably illegal as they don't own MIUI or Android and copyleft is designed to prevent this kind of thing.
To add insult to injury they started offering some mediatek roms for free. When people stopped paying the patreon they removed them from the download sites.
Shame on them and shame on the AliExpress sellers. If anyone knows a good course on building android roms and reverse engineering them let me know. Maybe I can fix this situation.
I have been trying some of the immutable linux OSes because from what I understand they are more modern and feature better security and reliability. What I have found so far is shocking. Half of these don’t support my laptop (probably because it’s nvidia optimus). Some I tried like guix were very difficult to install, configure, and use with sprase documentation. Good luck trying to use KDE, wayland, or pipewire for example. BlendOS was notably better and could at least run on my laptop but chocked with nvidia driver issues.
I have switched to pop os on my laptop for now but looking at alternatives and what to install on my desktop.
