This is a bigger culture shock than the metric vs imperial system to me.
  • Interesting, thanks. Bungalow in the US would usually mean something like quaint. Where as you can also have a "ranch" house in the US which is a single story usually with a large open floor plan.

Republicans dismayed by Trump’s ‘bad’ and ‘unprepared’ debate performance
  • The thing that allowed the Democrats to switch candidates was that the Democratic National Convention had not happened yet, which is when the candidate is officially locked in as the party's candidate on ballots for president.

The Republican National Convention was mid July. Trump and Vance are locked in. To swap candidates now would be considerably more difficult for them (not to mention having to fight against a self centered toddler that will refuse to let anyone other than him run).

Swapping out candidates would be good for the Republicans. The process of swapping out candidates would not be.

  • A flat is an apartment.

I (American living in London for more than a decade) don't think I've ever seen a detached single story house before. There might be a name but they're rare enough that I've never heard it before.

Trump falsely claims children are being forced into gender transition ops at school
  • Trump's most successful political method was that he changed lanes faster than anyone could keep up. It allowed him to control the narrative. You're falling for the same tricks that won him the 2016 election. Don't engage.

Just call them weird and move on.

"Sure is weird someone is thinking about school children's genitalia instead of their choice of weapons for a school shooting, especially at a time like this." Done.

    Some basic info about USB
  • Black is USB 2, blue is USB 3, and Orange or Yellow are usually "always on" and/or 2.4 amp or some other kind of thing like that.

    Some basic info about USB
  • I've never seen any of the SS 10gig or USB PD icons, but I've seen the rest. I've got Thunderbolt icons on at least 2 icons and SS USB 3.1 icons on many normal USB A ports.

    Thank you!
  • As an American living in Europe for over a decade, Americano is the default I have to drink when I'm out unless I go to a hipster coffee shop. The main reason being practically no one does filter coffee, but almost every restaurant has an espresso machine.

And it tastes like cigarettes because even though every restaurant has an espresso machine it doesn't mean they clean it, and doesn't mean their staff knows how to use it properly. Water temps too high, too much coffee grounds, over compressed, lowest quality beans. Fucking everywhere. It's awful.

Linus Tech Tips uploaded a video showing how to block ads on Youtube. Which was removed by Youtube for community guidelines violations.
  • It's a user retention thing: if a user is reloading a video repeatedly while they're trying to serve an ad, there's (probably) something wrong with the ad server, so the best business move is to send them to the content they came to see, unmonetized, so that they will continue to use the platform in the future where you can monetize their future visits.

Ok so coffee is made from coffee beans. And beans are *also* made from beans. Why is nobody making, like, black bean coffee?
  • You can make cherry juice, but presumably you'd do that by crushing the cherry meat to extract the juice. That's different from how coffee is made. To create cherry coffee, we'd have to take the cherry pits, dry them, roast them, grind them, then pour hot water over them.

Besides money or valuables, what items or info would you be pleasantly surprised to find?
  • I've got a pair of vice grips somewhere in my flat.

It's not even that big of a flat, and I don't even have that much stuff. There's no way I ever left the flat with them. Yet they've completely disappeared.

  • My mini ITX motherboard doesn't have as many USB ports as I'd like. I've also decided 2024 is the year I try to kill off all my USB micro devices and replace them with USB-C (sorry PS4 controller). So I'm going to go Bluetooth as much as it makes sense (because of the limited USB ports), and use devices that charge over USB-C

For communication during gaming over discord I've been using a Logitech g933 for about 8 years with the USB receiver, so that's on the chopping block.

I'm quite happy with the sound quality for music I currently get out of my Bluetooth headphones. A2DP gives a really great experience. Using those same headphones as a communication device with Discord for both recording and playing audio is really awful though as it kicks back to HFP/HSP. So I was wondering if it's possible to do a dedicated Bluetooth microphone? And more importantly: does connecting a micrpphone-only device over Bluetooth still need to be in the HFP/HSP profile to work?

To be clear: my goal is to be wires-free for my audio solution, while having both a high quality audio output to hear my beloved gaming companions AND to have a high quality (or at least clear quality) audio input so my beloved gaming companions can hear me. The microphone built into Bluetooth headphones is generally shit and sounds like being on a cell phone call from 1999, even when using it on an android or Windows machine that gave custom Bluetooth stacks that don't fall back to HSP. That's why I'm interested in using a dedicated high quality (probably condenser?) microphone, I'm just unsure if that high quality makes it back to the computer when connected through Bluetooth.

From the last couple hours of searching and reading I can only seem to find information regarding Bluetooth recording+playback combined headsets and the A2DP/HSP stuff. I can't seem to find anything about regarding dedicated microphones quality over Bluetooth.
