OpenAI is reportedly going all-in as a for-profit company
  • ... To the surprise of <checks notes> absolutely nobody

Actually I have a question and I admit knowing nothing of the legal framework here but...

Isn't it absolutely ridiculous that a not-for-profit entity can exists solely for the purpose of developing a closed-source piece of software, demand to train it for free off copyrighted material, just to switch to a for-profit entity??

Sound 100% like tax avoidance. Like me registering a charity so I can throw a mega concert/party privately, secure preferencial treatment on supplies, get discounts on artists or even free performance and then switch to for profit as I start selling tickets

There's a reason we aren't as harsh on the Steam Deck. Actually, a couple.
  • Indeed... I avoided it for years because I bought into the "it's too heavy" narrative.

Then I saw a phoronics benchmark sayin it was actually faster and lighter than lxde if you turn effects off

I tried it then and was blown away, never looked back

  • And for those who have not tried it, the desktop is fully functional (not some half baked version. My son uses the desktop mode as a full school workstation for internet browsing, email, teams, Google docs, etc

  • I have to say, Norris kind of spanked Max today.

Norris has been eating away at Max's win but today he started 15 (I think) and Max 6. Norris ended up ahead of Max who only gained a spot after the Checco/Sainz crash.

  • Unsure how their views are (usually terrible when they give us the inside helmet camera) but throughout the race I could barely see the colours of the cars from the ultra bright glare.

It seems they were going from sun in your face to tunnel dark. These people are super human to drive like that

  • Indeed, I felt sorry for him. He had earned some good points.

Having said that and even though the Stewards rules nobody was at fault, I believe he had the better chance to avoid this crash

  • Unpopular opinion here but Ricciardo has to go... almost literally ANYONE coming into F1 has shown to be better that him, even in much lesser cars.

It is time to open the seats for new talent!

Previous poles vs wins. Will Charles brake the curse this year?
  • I don't care about these "curses"... if Poles always win, then the race is the qualifier

I am loving this second half of the season (end of first half) where it finally feels like multiple teams can win and even the nature of the race, influences the formula.

The entirely predictable F1 races of last years almost made me want to quit watching

MAGA scrambles to excuse Trump chickening out of second debate
  • Why does everyone here in Lemmy feel it's an affront to disagree or clarify something?!

I do not care to continue to bend over backwards to interpret and conjure what possible sense Trump may have had. He is spewing hateful bullshit and I will not indulge him filling the blanks. If you want to keep on translating for Trump, that's on you

    I’ve attempted to educate.

Yeah, I'm the pedantic one here...

I have work in the medical field for 20 years; I have yet to hear anyone refer to a dead fetus removal as an abortion. Abortion is defined as the "termination of pregnancy"... when a fetus dies for natural causes, the pregnancy has been terminated; any and all procedures afterwards to safeguard the life of the mother are NOT considered an abortion.

After charger, Apple removes USB-C cable from the box
  • Now, Apple might argue that they’re being environmentally conscious by reducing packaging waste. That’s a fair point,

It isn't... That's like not flushing the toilet in a public bathroom to "save water"

BOMBSHELL: U.S. Oil Companies Colluded to Raise Gas Prices

The FTC uncovered a series of texts between Pioneer Natural Resources CEO Scott Sheffield and OPEC officials agreeing to limit oil production to raise prices.

They raked in huge profits, while their scheme cost consumers $200 billion a year in higher prices.

    That’s about $3000 a year per family.
