Recommendation for Email-Provider
  • No, I think you are misunderstanding my poor explanation.

Your emails are encrypted at rest on their server regardless if you use the web client or IMAP through the bridge.

The thing is that the encryption layer must happen at some point in time when you communicate with their API:s. In the web client this encryption is built-in. IMAP on the other hand does not support this type of end to end encryption, so the bridge adds this layer for you.

So you communicate unencrypted locally between your email client (Thunderbird for example) and the Protonmail bridge that you have installed locally on your computer. Then Protonmail bridge encrypts and decrypts all emails for you. So to your email client, it seems like a normal email server, but in reality everything is encrypted.

(Standard "encrypted email" disclaimer: Your emails are not encrypted in transit unless both parties, sending and receiving, are set up for encryption. Email is otherwise not end to end encrypted in transit)

    Recommendation for Email-Provider
  • Imap and end to end encryption are not possible at the same time.

Bridge exposes an IMAP interface but encrypts everything as Proton would, had you used the web client.

    It solves a technical limitation.

New phone, new OS? Is it worth switching from Lineage/microG to Iodé?
  • I think that is just about how to strip the iodeOS modifications from the system without a complete reset or something. Probably using adb and fastboot as you mentioned. But I have no idea about how any of this works or why I would want to do that.

If you want to install any other OS, just go about it as you would normally. I don't see how this changes anything really.

New phone, new OS? Is it worth switching from Lineage/microG to Iodé?
  • I've run iodéOS for at least a year by now.

It used to have some bugs that mildly inconvenienced me,but they have all been fixed now.

I really like it. It just works.

Uninstallable default apps just means that the stores (f-droid / aurora), browsers, camera and lots more can be removed in the settings, so you dont need to root access to do so.

Don't want the default email client and contacts app? Just uninstall them from the settings. Takes a reboot to take effect.

If you need them again, just go back there, install them again, reboot and you're golden.

Attaching a screenshot from the "Preinstalled apps" page in the settings.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

    Has anyone tried Proton VPN?
  • Been using it on my phone and browsers for maybe a year. Works great.

Browser plugin can be a bit shaky at times, but that might just be some side effect from my config of LibreWolf or something else.

Please talk me down: "I'm just doing my job" is the new "I was just following orders".
  • Most, if not all, of those hired as a software developers at any of these companies has loads of other jobs they could take. The only thing setting them apart is the size of the paycheck.

For less in-demand skills I get your point though.

    Flohmarkt is a Fediverse Marketplace
  • I believe money shouldn't be involved.

Just match sellers and buyers together and let them figure the terms and transaction out themselves.

All that is needed is a way to find what you want and a solid system of building trusted profiles with ratings and such.

Not a simple task, but keep the money out and it will all be easier.

    Thoughts on my next backpack
  • The roll top expansion will only be needed every now and then, so aesthetics for those times are not critical.

The problem I see with a camera insert in a small bag is that the access to the camera will still be inconvenient. Especially when packing stuff other than camera gear.

I like the look and features of the prvke, but the camera part might be a bit overkill for my gear. At least for the time being. I am considering upgrading to a Sony full frame mirrorless though.

    Thoughts on my next backpack
  • I have been looking at the wandrd prvke, both the 21 and the 31 L versions, but my concern is that even the essential camera cube takes up to much space for my needs.

All I need is my camera with 1 lens attached, 2 lenses and a couple of filters really. I would like to have the rest of the bag be for clothes or whatever I’d like to pack with me for a weekend trip.

What is your experience on this? Does the roll top expand the capacity a lot? How does it look when fully rolled out and packed to capacity? What have you managed to fit in it when packing it to its capacity?

Thanks for helping with my desicion :)

Street Complete Notes - Am I doing this right?
  • As I learnt from other comments in this thread; The "things" overlay in StreetComplete is great for adding stuff like this!

  • Thoughts on my next backpack

I am looking for a new backpack for every day carry where I always want my camera gear with me (a DSLR, a filter and a couple of extra lenses).

I am looking at the Ramverk Pro Backpack (26L) with their small camera insert.

    I like:

    • The simplicity
    • The design
    • The large main compartment
    • Being able to simply add or remove all camera gear by adding or removing the camera insert

    I don't like:

    • No water bottle holder
    • No quick access to camera
    • To few images showcasing the insert in the bag

Do any of you have this setup? Do you like it?

    Would you recommend something else?

  • No, I thought the overlays were just sets of different types of quests I could use depending on what I wanted to work on.

    Thanks for pointing this out!

  • I just started "playing" Street Complete and noticed there was no way to add stuff like new bemches amd trash cans to the map. I found the "create note" feature and started using that for this purpose.

Before I continue like thisI just wamted to check with you guys and see; Am I doing this right?

I made some note about a new trash can, some new bench and some new stairs.

What are some good recommendations on books (physical or digital) on photography I can read to become a better photographer?

I have had my Nikon D3200 for about a year now and am having lots of fun with it. Now that I will soon have some time off from work, I want to improve my skills and become a better photographer.

I have learned and now understand the basics of the exposure triangle and how to use these settings to create different effects as desired.

What I think I need the most is to become better at composition and finding the right angles that give a shot its depth.

What literature would you recommend I read during my time off to become better?

You can see my journey in my posts here on Lemmy, or for a more easily digestible format, check out my Mastodon account.

If something needs more information, just ask, and I'll reply.

I appreciate any advice you have for me.
