Community rules & banner update
It’s somehow been three months since @IoSapsai@lemm.ee and I agreed to take over moderation of this community, and we’ve not really had to do anything other than keep an eye out for reports. It’s not exactly been a taxing job, so firstly thank you stitchers for being so undramatic!
But that all happened while I was still super ill and to be honest most of November and December is like a weird fever dream. So I kind of did not do the one thing I said I’d do at the time: post some prospective community rules.
Basically what I’m thinking is we want to have something written down that we can point to just on the off-chance of misbehaviour, but at the same time we don’t need anything draconian or super specific while we’re so small.
Since I’ve already been through this process with !knitting@lemmy.world and there are even quite a lot of people here who are in there too, I think it makes sense to maybe start off with similar rules to the ones the knitters agreed and then diverge if we need to.
Main concerns over there were:
- encouraging people to add pattern info to their posts and
- making sure we have a rule in place to allow removal of ads
On that second point, it was generally agreed that active members of the community should be free to advertise their shops and products in context, but a complete stranger barging in to post a straight-up ad and then leave should be removed. Basically kind of vibe-based, depending on if you look like a spammer or not, which works fine for a small community tbh.
I’d love to hear from community members on this. Are you ok just following the template from /c/knitting for now? Is there something more specific to us you’d also like to see included in the official rules? Or do you maybe disagree with one of those two things above and want us to rethink?
Input very much welcome, thank you!

And for a bit more of a fun thing, we have a random community banner and icon that I guess the original owner just googled on the day and never thought about again. In /c/knitting I made a banner featuring some recent FOs that had been posted by the most active members, and that was pretty popular.
I’d be happy to knock up something similar for here, but also want to throw it open in case anyone else would like to give banner design a go! Maybe we’ll say if nobody else comes up with something by the end of March I’ll go full collage mode with our FOs, that gives time for a few entries if you fancy it?
We'll also need an icon and I did not make the knitting one so am officially looking for ideas of what we could use. Actual images, vague concepts, all assistance welcome!
Thank you for bearing with this wall of text. Now get back to stitching!

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem This is a Monster Dual Adjustable Dashboard Car Mount - Normally for two cell phones or one large one for use in a vehicle. But I found it and immediately knew it would help me immensely when I #CrossStitch because it's compact and it takes up far less room than my tablet's case/cover stand. You can find it at Advance Auto at https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/monster-double-vision-2-in-1-foldable-dash-mount-2mncm0112b0a2/12252355 or on Amazon
I have been informed that using packing tape to somewhat "laminate" labels on my attempts to reorganize my #EmbroideryFloss #Stash is too noisy at the current hour... Therefore I have been relegated to #CrossStitch for the moment instead... Wow. Twist my arm there... 😉

Done! Technically finished before my sister's birthday but needs to be framed and some real life stuff got in the way so will still be belated. But! It's done. And adorable.
What's everyone else working on today?
I propose a new hashtag for #CrossStitchers to follow! #FantasticCrossStitchTools or #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem . (Yes, kind of a shameless take on J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts series. But better! Because it has to do with #CrossStitch!)
So, this is to share all our favorite tools & where we found them so others can search them out & enjoy them too. If it's been gifted, it's okay to share it too, but each share has to include where you got it.

I know this is #Embroidery instead of #CrossStitch (for the cross stitch groups), but I found this on X (that's such an awful name, isn't it?) and thought it was really cute so I wanted to share. I know there are some out there who organize similar animations with cross stitchers, too, but I've never gotten to participate.
Enjoy!

I...kinda sorta bought some more embroidery floss today. Three thread packs at Hobby Lobby. They package it as "Artiste" but it's actually manufactured in Mexico by a company that sometimes goes by "Hilo Iris" and other times simply by "Iris." I found a color list from 2011 online, and a DMC conversation chart they compiled themselves. But, being the OCD idiot I am, I decided to try to match the threads myself...
Getting close to wrapping this up. Will probably miss my sister's birthday, but Christmas is around the corner. Or it'll just be a belated gift.

I decided awhile back that I won't share fully completed #PrayerCloths to groups because I know they offend some people & I want to be sensitive to that. But I thought it may still be okay to share progress before the Scripture is added. If any are interested in seeing it finished, I'll post that to my page with #CrossStitch & a few others.

Me (at 4:45PM): I'll #CrossStitch for 15 minutes before I start cooking dinner.
Husband (five hours later): Can we order Domino's before they close at 11???
I just finished one commission that I realized I severely undercharged for once I started it, now I have a few other people asking me to make more pieces!
I looked up some info online about setting prices, but I'm honestly never sure how many hours a cross stitch is going to take me to finish, and the other method they recommended was charging by the number of stitches, but that seems like it ends up making things more expensive than people would be willing to pay...
Does anyone else have an easy pricing structure they use?
Is @thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee still on here? I feel like she might have some experience with this lol

WIP Wednesday!
Now that I finished my commission piece I'm back to my Spirited Away cross stitch! Just finishing the last parts of section 5 of 6 so hopefully this one will be done soon!
What are you guys working on today?

The Cacodemon commission piece is going well! Switching back to 14ct for this one is helping it move along quickly lol
What is everyone else working on this week?
I started this just after finishing Totoro so this is a few weeks of work. Will be a present for my sister when finished.

WIP Wednesday!!!
I haven't had time to get as much of this done as I'd like this week, but you can at least see the rest of the 5th panel here taking shape! I hope to get this part finished up by the weekend!
Making decent progress on panel 5 of 6 here! It's pretty much just that one soot sprite and a few more of those flowers that take forever lol The final panel is almost entirely black and white so that one should go pretty quick once I get to it!
I keep forgetting about the Lemmy groups, and my health sucks, so this post is just trying to make my addled brain remember these groups, heh.
Anyhoo, this project is for my elder son (if anyone remembers the Vault Boy one I made for my younger son a few months back), and I'm attempting a few new tricks.
- I stapled this monks cloth to a painting frame. It does look like I'll need to do some tightening once I'm done, though. So I hope I can figure that out.
- I painted the outside, eyes, and mouth, and I do like how the mouth and eyes make the fabric pop.
- I found a larger needle that came with a kit on one heck of a sale at Hobby Lobby, and that is what I'm using. However, it is a tad too large for the yarn I got. So quite a bit of it looks rather frazzled,.
- And I'm attempting (all-be-it a poor one) flow. (I have no idea what the proper term would be, heh, but it's where the thread leans in one direction, or flows along a line so each row...erm...flows with every other row. (Oof! Well hopefully you can understand that gibberish, HAH).
Meh, regardless of the issues (and boy can I not draw worth snot) it still looks pretty darn good. Now for the body...:grimacing:...The proportions are just a tad off, but it'll have to do.

woops! Guess I didn't post about the Vault Sweet Vault here...Well, here's that one.
I want to frame that Totoro stitch and my wife would really prefer a round frame. I don't really want to use just a hoop but have had trouble finding round frames in a 12-14" size that seem nice/decent quality. Anybody have any recommendations?
*** update:
So my wife found a round record album display case that was 12". It had a couple little quirks, but ended up working pretty well. The trouble was nobody really frames round objects. We ended up taking it to a Michaels and they did it, but there were definitely a couple hiccups in the process. (They tossed the back of the frame and just papered over it once they had the stitch in place. Mostly because they didn't pay attention when we said there was a lip in there they needed to take into account because it was meant to display a record... Oh well)
From the front it looks pretty great and we have it up on the wall now and I am pretending the back is fine. Heh.

After 10 months. Finished. Biggest project I've tackled to date. I'm super happy right now. Will look for a frame to finish the project for good.
I'm still new to cross stitch. My mom sent me this cheetah kit made by The Stranded Stitch. So far, so fun!

WIP Wednesday!!!
Once I finish up these last 2 flowers there are only 2 sections left to do! I still think it's funny that I picked this pattern thinking it would be quick since there are only 10 colors, but it's been so complicated that it's taken me longer than any other cross stitch I've done so far lol

Policy changes go into effect next month.
Totoro was too big to bring so I grabbed the little katamari damacy kit my kids got me for Christmas. It was a normal pattern but at the last second I came up with the joke and had to use it. (for those not familiar with the game you play as a prince)

Found this on YouTube in relation to project prep & organization & thought I'd share. I already have my own way I prep & organize for projects, but I still thought it was amazing & that someone else may want to see if it works for them. The video also shows some clips of how they organize floss into binders, though not how they do that part, and I thought that was pretty ingenious too. https://youtu.be/tmj7ELFcqHc?si=pqWIslhs2bd9Ybog
I had to frog almost all the progress I made last week and redo it after realizing I'd somehow stitched everything in the new section one row too low... Thankfully I got caught back up and made a little more progress though so I hope this panel will be done by Friday!
Probably close to half done with this color of rain. It's... something. I definitely have to convince myself a little more to work on it.
There aren't really any other instructions included on the PDF. I think it's supposed to be a half stitch of one color and then a half stitch of the other maybe?
I started it to keep my hands occupied during a class. I love the simple 2-color pattern. I picked the kit up from Stitched Modern.
