LW Holiday Logos

Hello World,

You may have seen the LW holiday themed logos we have used for Halloween and Thanksgiving. LW's users represent many countries around the world and we want to celebrate holidays and other special days that are local to you, but our team is fairly small and we aren't aware of a lot of the local customs out there. So we're asking you what you would like to see represented in a LW themed logo. What are some holidays/special days in your area and how do you celebrate them? And not just major holidays, we would like to celebrate festivals, days of remembrance, and other special days.

Please, comment below your suggestions and ideas on how we could represent them in the LW logo.

EDIT: Mostly looking for events throughout the year. What's left of 2023 is already in work. Thanks!

Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha celebrated by 1.7 billion people in the world :) not sure how to best represent them tho.

I wasn't paying attention/didn't think about it until now, but was the Thanksgiving logo also up for Canadian Thanksgiving or only the USian one?

In terms of ones coming up soon, I'm a fan of Saturnalia (Dec 17-23) and Festivus (Dec 23).
- The first logo made was for Halloween, so we, unfortunately, missed Canadian Thanksgiving, but will be sure to include next year. Thanks for the link. What we're looking for is users' personal experiences with holidays, as we may not be as familiar as a person local to that area would be. We can easily look up a list and make something, but we want to make sure they are represented accurately. Thank you!

In honor of !fuckcars, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is the 3rd Sunday in November. Every year, approximately 1.3 million people (and untold numbers of pets and wildlife) are killed in traffic crashes.

How to visualize on the logo (two ways):
Crass but clear: tire tracks across a x.x face
Respectful but subtle: a bicycle helmet, a tear, and a vigil candle (bicycle riders are disproportionately victims of traffic violence, so the WDoR is often organized by bicycle clubs or traffic safety groups with a bicycle focus, plus there's no way to visually represent the other disproportionately-affected group: pedestrians).

The June 4th Tiananmen Square vigil, though banned since COVID and the NSL, was a HK tradition (and elsewhere of course, though most significantly in HK) that would be good to replicate here.

Rosenmontag is a German holiday that does not seem to be well-known in the rest of the world. Just put a Narrenkappe on Lemmy's head and you're good.
Chinese New Year might be another interesting one, but as I'm not exactly well-informed about its holiday customs and traditions, I'd like to leave design ideas to people who know more about it than me.

Two more suggestions that are upbeat and quirky (and highly regional): Cascadia Day (May 18) and Exploding Whale Day (Nov 12).
Cascadia Day is on the anniversary of the Mt St Helens eruption and is a celebration of the Cascadia ecoregion: a geographic area comprised of the NW United States and SW Canada that share similar natural features (there are several proposed areas, but the generally accepted definition is Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia). While there is a small succession movement associated with Cascadia, it's mostly a recognition of the unique and interconnected ecology spread across several US states and British Columbia, as well as the interconnected human element across state and national borders (especially along the relatively-densely populated I-5/Hwy-99 corridor from Eugene to Vancouver, BC). The logo would be easy: superimpose the Cascadia flag on the Lemmy mascot.

Exploding Whale Day: This is an unofficial Oregon holiday of sorts. In 1970, a dead sperm whale washed ashore in the smallish town of Florence, Oregon. The Oregon department of transportation decided to blow up the carcass with dynamite, which (spoiler alert) went about as well as could be expected. The story was so bizarre that the event is still commemorated to this day, with a small celebration held annually in Florence (meanwhile on the Internet, folks celebrate by posting memes and rewatching the KATU news footage of the original event). A whale version of the Lemmy logo (perhaps with the body of a whale but keeping the Lemmy ears and whiskers, and with an explosion in the background) on the anniversary would be a fun way to share this local event.

It's a huge public holiday in Colombia, on December 7th.

Diwali/Deepavali is probably the most widely celebrated Indian festival and can be represented by some variation of an earthenware lamp 🪔 and fireworks

Little late to the party, but Matariki (Maori new year - ma - ta - ri - ki) would be nice to have. Little difficult to implement as its day changes each year, but its a holiday that has only recently come to the forefront in NZ after a century of being suppressed or ignored, and we have only had one public holiday of it since it started again. Late june/early July, usually a Friday.

This should honestly be left up to communities to decorate. Asking all of lemmy.world sounds like chaos, or at the very least not enough space to encompass it all respectfully.

Natal Day, the first Monday of August to celebrate Nova Scotia. Pay no mind to those other provinces' celebrations on the same day.

  Sorry, it was the 7th last year. I forgot it falls on the first Monday of August each year.
  It's a civic holiday that celebrates the founding of Halifax and Dartmouth, but all of Nova Scotia now celebrates it as a civic holiday. Most provinces have their own version falling on the same day, but as a Nova Scotian, I'm biased. The Nova Scotia flag or our tartan patterned onto the Lemmy symbol would be a way to go. The bluenose, and Peggy's Cove lighthouse are also well known icons, but probably harder to incorporate. You could also go with a blue nose, as we're known as Blue Nosers (named after a potato), but that might be confusing.

Could we add holiday logos for the Dutch (and Belgian) holidays of Sinterklaas (December 5th and 6th), and perhaps Kings Day? (April 27th)
If I have some direction on the style I could perhaps Photoshop something together :)
Edit: Carnaval would be fun too, but that one might be tricky because it falls on a different day every year (and is also not consistent between countries, I don't think..)

Australia day is the 26 January.

Sorry for the late reply! There are some hungarian fellows here on Lemmy.world and we have 3 national holidays. Here are some suggestions what to implement and how:
March 15th: 1848-49 Revolution
You could integrate some of the main symbols of the revolution (such as the 12 points of the reformers or Hungarian cockade) in the logo.
Aug 20: Country was established by Saint Steven
This event is also mainly symbolized by the Hungarian cockade and flag but you could make the logo "wear" the Hungarian crown.
October 23: 1956 Revolution
In the 1956 revolution the communist coat of arms was cut out from the Hungarian flag, this became the main emblem of the revolution. You could add/decorate the logo with Molotov coctails and a mainly destroyed statue too. (or tanks idk (t34-85 t54))

Fasnacht Day - A Pennsylvania Dutch holiday on the day before Lent in which you use all your sugar, fat, and oil to make fasnachts (doughnuts) before fasting for Lent. Essentially a holiday for doughnuts. The images on Wikipedia are scuffed as hell and homemade fasnachts are really good. Maybe the Lemming (Lemmy?) could be in the shape of a doughnut.
Oilfield Prayer Day - Celebrated in Oklahoma on October 13 as a day for all faiths to "thank God for the blessings created by the oil and natural gas industry and to seek His wisdom and ask for protection” according to OK Governor Mary Fallin. Personally I celebrate by buying 10-20 gallons of gas and pouring it down the nearest storm drain to do my part for the oil industry. /s Set Lemmy on fire.
