TIL Disney's Star Wars Hotel was a massive waste of time
  • Youtube averages 122 million users a day. 10 million views makes it far from something the average YouTube user has seen, let alone the average person.

  • Hypothermia can be a problem in temperatures as high as 50F. 0F is a meaningless number, outside of purely subjective "it's cold" uses.

  • That's as hot as a person can really tolerate.

There's large chunks of the world proving that false every day. For the geographically impared, the simple fact that Phoenix has existed for longer than air conditioning, proves that statement false.

And 0F as the low point is equally as useless.

  • For day to day use, it's just a single number, no one is doing any conversions, etc, with the number. That was my point. There's nothing to remember. Do you forget what 72F feels like? Do you have to scale it in your head?

  • When it comes to a single number on a scale, whatever you grew up with will be more "obvious". 100F doesn't give me any more information than 38C does. The whole "base 10" thing only matters if you are actually doing some math to that number.

  • "Intuitive" is a meaningless metric for a single scaled number. Whichever system you are used to will be the more "intuitive".

Also, climate can play into which system feels more useful. Where I live, 100F occurs only rarely (and since air conditioning is almost ubiquitous, not something I'd bother looking out for), while 0C is an outdoor temperature that I do need to be aware of for half the year.

    Our approach to road safety
  • The dead don't care about responsibility, and hence I'm not really commenting on it. I'm just saying it's not in your own best interest to rely on others for your own safety, when it's entirely possible to handle it yourself.

  • Don't be so quick to make assumptions.

Have you never been in a shop that uses bridge cranes? I can see a half dozen 200 ton versions from where I'm standing now. At best the operator might hit the warning buzzer. And no, there's no formal training requirements to use them.

  • I've never really understood this type of thought when it comes to safety. Simple self preservation should lead you to the same conclusion. When it comes to safety, the squishiest one loses.

We don't blink an eye when told to not stand under something being lifted by a crane, so why balk at being told to be safe around the two ton travelling metal boxes?

Teamsters Canada: Without the right to strike, corporate Canada will become less inclined to negotiate in good faith, knowing the government can now bust a union on a whim
  • The government probably wouldn't have if both rail lines weren't shut down simultaneously.

The Teamsters should take a page from the way the UAW/CAW handles the Big Three; focus negotiations on one, then tell the other "here's the template".

Keeping the rail lines running is too critical for the government to allow a protracted lockout/strike, but a (non-conservative) government would likely allow far more leeway if only one of the railways are shut at one time.

    But it'd be funny, though
  • There's a difference between WMDs that can reach the US, and ones that can only be deployed locally. Russia has the former (and a lot of them), hence no invasion.
