  • The radiator hoses are as old as the car bar a few that have been changed in the last 24 years. The radiator looks pretty good, the hoses look alright as well, I just had some problems before out of the blue so that’s why I’m a bit worried. I also had slight ovearheating last year during searing summer days under either very high load (slow and steep climb with 4 heavy dudes and luggage) or inching in traffic with the AC on. Nothing a short stop at idle with the AC off wouldn’t fix

I have some nice grippy summer tires that I used for a single season, so that should be okay. The spares will come from the winter set which are a bit older but they are good enough as spares (I wouldn’t drive on them for another season, but I tend get new tires after two seasons max).

Maintenence under my watch was pretty consistent. The car is at the shop to take care of anything I neglected. They’re changing the cambelt, waterpump, rocker cover gasket, a few bushings, pretty much the entire exhaust system and a few bits here and there. Pads are brand new, haven’t had the chance to bed them in yet.

Last year I went on a similar trip (roughly 2000km but only 1-2 passes in mild weather) and things went great. Now there will be a LOT of climbing and descending and it’s the height of summer.

Honestly I trust the car, but I like to be prepared. It’s an old hile milage hero (about 470k on the clock) with the venerable VAG 1.8T (and a cheeky map). On paper it has no business running, much less doing this sort of stuff, but it never let me down regardless of not being easy on it. If I had the time and money until the trip I would jury rig a sprinkler above the intercooler to cool the charge air a little further, but I don’t see how it would go well at this stage.

Roadside tips and tricks for alpine roadtrip

I’m planning an epic road trip through the alps with about 20 mountain passes in my old shitbox and I was thinking if something goes wrong I’ll probably have to bodge it myself.

Anyone have any tip and tricks for coolant leaks, etc? What should I bring with me other than the obvious fluids, spare wheels, toolbox? What are some common mechanical issues I should look out for?

  • A few years ago I subscribed for a few months, but didn’t dive too deep. Is there still a social aspect to usenet these days or is it just file sharing? It would be great to find forums and such.

  • I got a request from hetzner to upload my id and selfies. Is that something that is normal in this day and age? I remember back in the day it wasn’t needed. At most, a declaration of my residence and such.

  • A few years ago, I went out and brought myself a nice pair of perscription sunglasses, trouble was I didn’t have any spare cash to buy regular glasses. So, for about 2-3 years I had shades on everywhere I went, day or night. What I noticed is that if you’re confident enough people don’t really mind or act any different. Now that I have both, I easily keep the sunglasses on without noticing and there is no fuss usually unless I go into a bank or something.

  • This was the first album that I “borrowed” from my brother without his knowledge. From last grade in kindergarten to high school whenever there was a “bring your favorite cd” assignment I brought this. By the end of high school the cd was so beat up it was barely listenable. Maybe I should by him a new copy now that a few decades passed…

  • I just saw a post in my feed yesterday where some HR cancer (probably a connection’s connection) posted the most nauseating image about how everyone should use linkedin (which is mandatory anyway). Then she jerked herself on the achievement that save a few bottom feeders every employee is using linkedin after her campaign.

  • I feel a little bit like I was duped by ml. Chose it because the devs were here, but I haven’t thought about the top level domain until I saw their profile pictures. Now, I’m no stranger to leftist views, but I’m pretty far from being ml. I might switch if things get ugly, but I can take some minor stigma for a while longer.

  • I have a T14 gen1 ryzen 7 (only 16G of ram for now), with integrated graphics running bazzite. Civ 5 and 6, rimworld, FTL run flawlessly. Anno 1800 is a bit laggy, but playable. I also do some sim racing and no complaints there either, if graphics are set just right, so I think that the bar for hardware is pretty low. As for hardware, not sure what I’d go with, but I’m sure there is no need to go overboard. For software bazzite is amazing if you want near hassle free gaming.

As for accessories I have a keychron keyboard which was a worthwhile investment and a Mionix 3200 mouse that’s over 10 years old, still amazed at the build quality and value for money. A good keyboard mouse combo is invaluable.

  • I’m yet to try BeamNG, would be cool to test some cars I built in Automation. I was a bit hesitant about AMS2 for some reason, but might as well give it a go. Although RBR would be the priority now.

    Sim racing and bazzite

Recently I dipped my toes in sim racing and I could run dirt 2.0 and AC fairly easily with a controller. A few weeks ago I bought a G920 and so far the only game that works with it proper is Dirt 2.0. AC and rF2 are a nightmare. AC shakes the wheel or doesn’t recognize it, rF2 just keeps steering on it’s own (even when the car is stationary, with autosteer off). I also tried RSF RBR, which runs, but after the first launch it doesn’t detect the wheel anymore.

DKMS is not supported on bazzite, I couldn’t get new-lg4ff to work. Oversteer works, but is sort of useless without the driver. I’m a little bit disheartened at this point. Since I bought the wheel, I spent way more time troubleshooting than racing.

Does anyone have any experience running these games on bazzite with a G920? Is there an easy fix to all of these issues that I’m overlooking?

I’m way too settled into bazzite to distrohop now and I really wouldn’t like to have MS in my household.

My main priority would be to get

Which is the correct Bazzite version for Thinkpad T14 (gen1, ryzen 7)?

    Hi all,

Been using fedora atomic on my previous laptop for about a year (kinoite) and when I bought my current one, I had the guy selling it install Bazzite on it. He installed the gnome version, which is not ideal and also there are a few weird things happening occasionally. I finally decided to just reinstall everything, but I’m stuck trying to get the right settings on the bazzite download page. This laptop has no dedicated GPU and there is no such option while selecting the hardware. Is there a correct choice in this case, or should I just go with whatever AMD GPU?

    Thanks,

EDIT: Thanks a lot for the replies, will try thse settings.

When Top Gear ended the UK fell apart.

By top gear ending, I mean the removal of Clarkson, Hammond and May. In 2015 they were fired and everything went to shit starting with brexit the following year.

    YouTube throttling issue with VPN

I’ve been using Proton VPN for 1-2 years and in the past few months I’ve had some serious issues with youtube flat out refusing to work properly. Sometimes I try piped which is really hit and miss. Anyone else experiencing something similar? Any solutions? Seems like most servers are rejected by google.

De-googling and privacy on Sony xperia

I have been considering replacing my nearly 7 year old iPhone (although very reluctant) and I was checking for options. Really the only phone that caught my eye was the Sony xperia 1 V, but I found no information about how to degoogle and lock down the device. I really like the features and the built in camera apps, etc. Is there a way to degoogle the phone without loosing the funcionality/ease of use?

Curing resin prints with the printer itself

    Hi all,

I’m quite new to resin printing and I was wondering if one was able to post-cure their prints with he printer’s built in “cleaning” function. I mean, it’s a pretty powerful UV light, right there. Does this damage the LCD more than usual? I was thinking of just “roasting” prints to cure them. If anyone tried it before, do share.

According to statcounter in June 2023 almost 3/4 of browsers used are Chromium

Sorry in advance for what might appear to be rambling (because it kind of is), but I had a few thoughts and I’m very curious how the community sees these things. I’ll try to do my best to condense them.

After reading through the discussion beneath a post about yet another Brave scandal, I decided to look up the marketshare of chromium. According to statcounter 73.43% of browsers used are chromium based (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Samsung Internet) and only a measly 2.8% use Firefox.

About the statistics: 73% of access to the internet for humans and bots alike go through software largely developed by one player. What are your thoughts on the effect this probably has on the development of the internet as a whole?

About brave and other wildly popular privacy focused products: compared to a lot of people in this fine community I’m a casual-privacist, but I do my best to review what sort of software/hardware I use, weigh opsec and convenience
