Hi everyone,
To better streamline communication for organizations relying on Proton Mail, we’re adding a new feature: Groups.
Create a group for a department or team in your organization, and assign its own dedicated email address. It then works as a distribution list, allowing everyone to reach all group members, all protected by end-to-end encryption.
For example, a group address for your customer care or HR team allows all inquiries directed to them to be seen by the entire team, eliminating the need for a shared email account.
Groups can also include addresses outside of your organization, such as customers, contractors, and agencies. However, in order to retain end-to-end encryption, external collaborators would need to use Proton Mail, too.
Unlike contact groups, already available in Proton Mail, Group addresses are better suited for organizations:
⭕ they are centrally managed and automatically available across the entire organization
🗓️ they remain valid even as team members change
The feature is rolling out progressively to users on Proton Mail Professional, Proton Business, and Visionary plans.
Once available, you can get started by going to Settings > Organization > Groups on the web.

Hi everyone,
We launched the Proton family plan over a year ago. Since then, many of you have asked for a more affordable option. Today, we are excited to introduce Proton Duo, our new plan designed to make online privacy more accessible.
You might consider safeguarding online privacy a personal duty, but what about your loved ones? If your partner still depends on Big Tech for their emails, documents, or photos, their sensitive information remains at risk.
For a limited time only, we are offering Proton Duo for $14.99/month with a one-year plan: that’s $60 in annual savings. This is a forever discount, so if you sign up for the promotion, you’ll keep this price forever.
Proton Duo includes:
- 2 users with separate logins
- 1 TB of storage to share + 15 GB of bonus storage every year
- Full access to Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, Proton Pass, and Proton VPN
- Everything included in Proton Unlimited ($60 yearly savings compared to two separate subscriptions).
How to get started
- Sign up for Proton Duo or upgrade your existing plan.
- If your family member doesn't already have a Proton account, they can create one for free.
- Invite your family member to your Proton Duo plan.
Use our Easy Switch tool to move your emails, calendars, and contacts from other providers to Proton in just a few clicks. Whether you're already using Proton or new to our community, Proton Duo makes it easier than ever to protect what matters most.

At Proton, we're on a mission to improve everyone's privacy on the internet. By choosing Proton, you're taking a stand for privacy—not just for yourself but also for your loved ones.
We'd love to hear your thoughts!

One redditor asked about it on the most recent AMA:
Hi, is there a plan to release protondrive for linux?
Proton CEO's answer:
We're currently looking at options for how to fund this. It's an expensive development because Linux has so many different flavors and we need deep integration with the filesystem, and it is not yet clear if there are enough Linux users that would allow us to offset the cost of this development. Like many things Linux, it may eventually just have to subsidized from Proton's reserve budget. That doesn't mean it won't get done, it will just take longer since we are also subsidizing several other efforts at this time, such as the Proton VPN free servers for elections campaign: https://protonvpn.com/blog/free-servers-before-elections

>Proton, the Swiss creators of privacy-focused products like Proton Mail and ProtonVPN, recently released the latest product in their ever-growing lineup: Proton Wallet. Announced at the end of July 2024, it promotes itself as "an easy-to-use, self-custodial" Bitcoin wallet that will ostensibly make financial freedom more attainable for everyone.
>It may well be that Proton Wallet is the easiest way to start using Bitcoin, but is a Bitcoin wallet the solution people need to improve their financial privacy?
>Contrary to popular belief, cryptocurrency is not an inherently private transactional system.
>Had Proton Wallet added support for Monero or a similarly private cryptocurrency, they could have single-handedly boosted a financial system that is actually private by default by a significant degree. In my eyes, failing to do so in favor of the market leader is an unfortunate step back from their "privacy by default" mantra.
>Proton Wallet seems like a product that doesn't know its own place in the world.
>Is it meant to save us from the tyranny of payment processors like PayPal who can freeze your funds at a whim?
>Or, was Bitcoin chosen to give us independence from fiat currency, including stablecoins, entirely?
>However, if Proton Wallet wasn't meant for all that, if it was simply meant to bring privacy to Bitcoin, then it's certainly a failure.
>Proton hasn't taken any risks with this product, meaning it's really only good for satisfying a singular belief: That Bitcoin is just inherently good, and anything to promote Bitcoin is inherently good as well. I don't share these fanatical beliefs of Bitcoin maximalists, however, when Bitcoin is demonstrably lacking in a wide variety of ways.
>Personally, I'm a bit of a cryptocurrency pessimist in general, but I can see some appeal for the technology in very specific areas. Unfortunately, Proton Wallet doesn't seem to fit in to a useful niche in any meaningful way. The functionality it does support is extremely basic, even by Bitcoin standards, and it simply doesn't provide enough value over the existing marketplace.
>If you're an existing Proton user simply looking for a place to store some Bitcoin you already have sitting around, Proton Wallet might be perfectly adequate. For everyone else, I don't see this product being too useful. Bitcoin is still far too volatile to be a solid investment or used as a safe store of value if you crave financial independence and sovereignty, and Proton Wallet simply isn't adequate for paying for things privately online.
I've been using the web clients of Proton Mail and Drive for a long time in Librewolf. Today it suddenly is stuck on the "Loading Proton Mail..." screen, getting no where. Still works in regular Firefox. Tried disabling both uBlock Origin and NoScript for the tab in case some settings there suddenly were changed, but did not help.
This is very frustrating.
EDIT: After a second reboot it now works again. Unsure why it took two reboots, I'm glad it works.

SMTP
I'm looking into getting Proton for business and one of the reasons is to use the SMTP to send email from Lemmy.wtf.
In the comparison list, it says it is included, but in the FAQ, it says that the SMTP service is only for select businesses?
(Rant)
In terms of development speed. Before Proton acquried Standard Note, the app was pushing releeases much faster. Now it gets the "Proton speed"
it is almost as if Proton is focus on something else nowadays, oh well
Proton recently released WireGuard support on Linux. While I really like it there's a small UI issue with the wifi icon. When connected to VPN it looks like unknown network(?). I have confirmed the issue on two laptops. Both running Fedora 40, KDE spin.
A bit of context:
I am a long time user of Proton (5+ years, Unlimited user) services. I am also a long time user of 1Password (since 2016). Understandably I have hundreds of items currently in my 1Password account, and a safe work flow on my devices with that.
Would it make sense to start moving those entries to Proton Pass (as it is included) and be off a bit cheaper, or keep them separated as to not throw all the eggs in the Proton basket?
Ideas, thoughts, tips or experiences?
Proton’s switch to ownership via a non-profit leaves me with deep concerns. I’m a resident/citizen of the US, and in the US it is possible for a determined outside hostile party to takeover a non-profit organization. Hostile takeover of non-profits has occurred many times in the US. Left-leaning activist organizations with government/NGO backing are many times the parties initiating the takeovers.
Proton’s core mission definitely puts it in the crosshairs of these kinds of takeover attempts.
I don’t know anything about Swiss legal structures for non-profits. How safe is the Proton Foundation for a takeover attempt? Can a determined activist organization get voted onto the board and engineer a takeover?
I'd like to move my music library off of my phone, and upload it to Proton Drive. It is thousands of nested folders and files, but all in one Music directory. Is there a way to add the entire directory?
I tried rclone and it freaked out at regular ping intervals and instead deleted everything on the drive. GG. I want to like you Proton but your decisions of late are ASTHENATE. I wouldn't have minded the crypto wallet release if basic features on the core apps were remotely coherently finished. The AI writer add on for a local model doesn't even work on Firefox. For people supposedly embracing the FOSStyle, this isn't the way. /rant
Every Monday morning I get a spreadsheet from one of my distributors that lists all items I have on pre and back order. I download that file, and then do my spreadsheet sorting. However, since I started to use the ProtonMail app on MacOS (vs in Safari) when I download the file, it gives an error that there is already a file by that name. When I save with Safari it adds a number to make it unique. I am unsure if this is a MacOS issue, or a ProtonMail app issue.
I am trying to send an email from an alias with simplelogin. I went to their website and clicked the contact link, but after sending the email, I looked in the headers and saw my real email with my real name. Is this on my side or can the recipient also see my real name? If so, how to turn this off?
A few months ago I installed Proton Drive on my new PC. It started having issues so I sent it back in for repair. I uninstalled Proton Drive then deleted my files for privacy.
Last week I installed Proton Drive again. To my surprise, it scrambled all of my files locally and remote. All my root folders were deleted and my root is now filled with "Delete conflict" files and folders.
I reported this to Proton immediately. After giving them my logs and details support told me...
- This is expected: "Proton Drive is designed to synchronize ALL changes, even after long periods of not syncing"
- No rollback is possible: "Please note that we are unable to revert this behavior. You will have to restore the files manually"
- They plan to address this: "Regardless, we will absolutely be making improvements to avoid such problems in the future."
For me I have about 100 files to address, which is manageable, but for others I'm sure this would be a showstopper. The delete conflicts don't have version history either, so I have to figure out how to weave everything back together.
I’ve been using Proton VPN for 1-2 years and in the past few months I’ve had some serious issues with youtube flat out refusing to work properly. Sometimes I try piped which is really hit and miss. Anyone else experiencing something similar? Any solutions? Seems like most servers are rejected by google.
I think this is the major feature that proton is missing that Google has. Given how big proton has become, I'd like to suggest proton to implement something like this for the ultimate Google like experience but with a trusted company.
I just got access to Proton Wallet earlier today. Is there anything you’d like to know?
Q&A
- I’m on a family plan and have been a paying customer for about 2/3 years.
- I haven’t bought any Bitcoin yet but will report back on that once I have.
I get lots of spam from particular mailing services like Constant Contact and Mailchimp. 100% always spam from these services. Is there a way to block messages received through these services? I can see the domains in the header of the email but I don't see an option to block messages based on info in the header.
I know Pass is new and growing, but I always thought that maybe it doesn't auto-fill credit card info because expanding the field types that get auto-filled past Username and password is difficult. But now that we have identities (which I'm super happy about), I'm thinking cc auto fill is being withheld for security reasons or something instead of technical ones.
What do you think?
Some feedback regarding Proton VPN documentation and some confusion regarding Firefox DNS configuration:
https://protonvpn.com/support/browser-extensions#firefox says:
"By default, Firefox does not route DNS queries through the HTTPS connection to our VPN servers" and then is mentioned a workaround to fix it.
That suggest alarming thing, that ProtonVPN Firefox user has to do some custom workaround in order to be private (prevent a DNS leak).
On another hand, https://protonvpn.com/support/dns-leaks-privacy says:
"DNS queries are routed through the VPN tunnel to be resolved on our servers"
these statements are a bit confusing/contradicting (though Proton later explains that this latest statement does not apply on a browser extension VPN apps) and Proton further adds at https://protonvpn.com/support/dns-leaks-privacy/#dns-over-https that the DNS leak can happen also due to enabled DoH feature in web browser.
Solution: ProtonVPN browser extension should (if possible) warn user in case it fails to process DNS and as a result, it is leaked. Vote for this feature request
----
Another "issue" is with the above mentioned/linked workaround (here I am speaking only about Firefox), this workaround: go to "about:config into the URL bar and hit <enter>. At the warning, click Accept the risk and continue → search for network.trr.mode"
In my case I had this set that variable to 5 which means DoH "Off by choice", Proton in said tutorial suggest value 3 instead, which means (According to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Trusted_Recursive_Resolver#DNS-over-HTTPS_Prefs_in_Firefox ) "Only use TRR, never use the native resolver.".
This confuses me since it looks like an opposite to what i have now, while any DNS leak site:
https://www.dnsleaktest.com
https://ipleak.net
does NOT report leak in my case nor in case i set network.trr.mode to 3. A bit weird but i guess no big deal?
Thanks for your feedback in advance.

Wanted to share something I found out about today when I was troubleshooting Jellyfin, hopefully it will help people out. Jellyfin wouldn't connect when I had LAN Connections enabled on ProtonVPN, so I contacted support. They let me know that having Kill Switch enabled with LAN connection is incompatible:
"...the Killswitch and Allow LAN connections features are mutually exclusive due to their functionality differences, you will be unable to utilize both of them at the same time.
Unfortunately, due to compatibility issues within these features and some users experiencing issues when utilizing both of them, our team decided to make them mutually exclusive, therefore, at this moment you will not be able to utilize the Killswitch feature and have access to your LAN, therefore, if you wish to have access to your LAN, we suggest you keep the Killswitch feature disabled."
Not sure I understand how the two settings are related, but good to know! Another note is that Split Tunneling had no effect on this, so clearly Kill Switch also effects apps that are excluded in split tunneling also.
Since a Linux client for Drive doesn't appear to be in the works for anytime soon, having folder statistics (ex. # items in the folder, size of data in the folder) available from the web app would be pretty damn useful for figuring out if a given folder matches an offline backup.
(Yes I know that unofficially there's the rclone thing but I tried that and got an "unusual account activity" error).
More broadly, it would be really helpful if Proton worked on base functionality for their existing products rather continuing to launch new products.

Hi everyone,
It has become increasingly common for authoritarian governments to go beyond purely online technical measures to discourage or block VPN use. Certain countries have even begun demanding citizens hand over their smartphones for physical inspection. Protecting free speech and fighting censorship is a core part of our mission and we're committed to doing what we can to help users around the world.
With today’s announcement, we hope to give people the tools they need to bypass censorship and access a free and fair internet wherever they are:
- Windows Stealth: Proton’s unique anti-censorship protocol, Stealth, comes to Windows, disguising VPN traffic as normal internet traffic, making it almost impossible to detect when someone is using a VPN: https://protonvpn.com/blog/stealth-vpn-protocol
- New servers: in 12 countries among those at the bottom of the Freedom House Index and the Democracy Index
- Discreet Icon: Android users can customize the Proton VPN app icon and name, and even disguise it to look like another unrelated application to protect users in authoritarian regimes where VPN users may be at risk.
Proton VPN's mission is to ensure freedom of speech and fight online censorship everywhere. Here’s how to get started with Proton VPN for free: https://protonvpn.com/free-vpn

Hello!
As per the title, I think it would be really useful to have an automatic upload and attachment of any items over the 25MB limit to Proton Drive. This is something I sorely miss from Gmail which makes sending some types of emails a pain as I have to first upload it to Drive, create a public link, keep track of all my publicly shared files, and make sure the link works before placing it awkwardly in my email.
