You can imagine what the wages are like. The traffic is absolutely nuts and schools are packed. They are great and very nice people and they would be all better off if there were fewer of them.

No, jackass. People that can barely afford their pets often(not enough) realize they can't afford kids. Getting rid of the pets doesn't make having kids affordable. Its also a lot easier to figure out who gets the pets when relationships sour.
There's just so many reasons almost no one is "choosing" pets over kids.
