Thanks to the commenter who reminded me that it's not bad to be reminded that the term is only a pejorative because conservative racists made it so.

1000% correct
Oh god... Imagine actually accepting tolerance.
I swear that "woke" is what these fucking troglodytes say when they know they've lost an argument. It's like some sort of primal defense mechanism.
It isn’t an insult. I don’t feel insulted by being called woke. I distribute a lot of harm reduction supplies and I get a lot of eye rolling, hard exhaling, shouldn’t they just take responsibility for themselvesing, I had hard times in my life tooing, etc. I am woke. Fuck you gonna do about it? Nazi wimps.
I feel insulted it is used in the name of bills designed to inhibit help to people in crisis. But I am (maybe) accidentally in a job that wasn’t meant to exist? I don’t seem to report to anybody? So I am going to do whatever I want until they fire me. And what I want to do is harm reduction and crisis intervention.
Edit: and since the Internet has maybe provided me with a soapbox, I will continue. You can seek help even if you aren’t homeless. It is better you do before that is even a possibility. If you feel substance use is diminishing your enjoyment of life, come for help.
I do understand hesitation. In some places, this costs money. Even in places these services are free, you feel shame. People are judging you. And — to be honest — a lot of healthcare providers are also judgemental. And I am currently in a small town of fewer than 2000 people. Your private business is maybe going to be everyone’s entertainment. Be strong. Once you do get into the mental health and substance use pipeline, we are mostly good and we are mostly there because we have big hearts yearning to help.
A lot of the reason I have opted to spend much of my time in the community is to overcome those barriers to access to help. Come say “hi”. I will say “hi” too. Maybe that is the first step. Worst case scenario is we were friendly to each other. Gross!
And if you are one of those skeptics who have said I am enabling substance users and let me know that opinion— even angrily — water under the bridge; you are not the first person experiencing substance related symptoms; we got you. Don’t let embarrassment stop you, please. Come back for help whenever you like. Seriously, I’m happy to help. I look forward to meeting you (again). And — if you don’t live near me — someone in your area is too.
The anti woke crowd .. hear that it is in someway anti racist
And dismiss it . They like their racism... It makes them feel important and powerful
Bully them into submission, racism and anti woke is not accepted, rather have peaceful people being themselves, than the people getting angry for people loving the same gender or trying to love themselves
Hey, that's just name calling. It's better to describe them by what they actually are: narcissistic, egocentric, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, narrow minded haters.
The same people also see being "progressive" as a bad thing. I swear, if they had they way, we still be amazed at the sight of fire while living in our caves.
Yeah but have you noticed how despite the fact that they normally hate progress and change because it makes their control harder, they're utterly obsessed with AI.
This place is obsessed with Ai (LLMs) to be fair.
If you're not woke your eyes are closed
Or stuffed with wool.
Or just plain stupid
The opposite of being woke is being asleep and oblivious to what's going on. It's crazy people say they aren't woke and think that's like a good thing lol.
It's like saying "I'm a fucking idiot" and being smug about it
“I’m a fucking idiot” That IS what I hear whenever a magat bleats.
To be fair, "woke" as it's widely known today originated as basically the left-wing counterpart to "redpilled", with both just being two different words used by different groups of people to favorably describe themselves as 'enlightened/privy to the real truth that most others aren't'. It's "woke" as in alert and aware of the truth, and "redpilled" similarly to how it is in the Matrix—becoming aware of the actual reality of things, taking the blinders off. Fundamentally, describing the exact same state of being.
So, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that if you read someone having written:
The opposite of being redpilled is being oblivious to what’s going on. It’s crazy people say they aren’t redpilled and think that’s like a good thing lol. It’s like saying “I’m a fucking idiot” and being smug about it
You wouldn't agree with them, even though the above is the exact same sentiment—the only difference is in what the content of said 'higher truth' that one who's woke/redpilled has become 'enlightened' to, is.
It's the exact same reason the demographic of people who are against abortion in the US don't call themselves "anti-abortion", but "pro-life". Like the above, it's a PR move. Would you accept a 'pro-lifer' telling you you're "anti-life" if you oppose their view? That's the kind of rhetorical maneuver you're employing in your comment.
My point is, the self-labeled descriptor is not important, and all sides will obviously use a descriptor that sounds good and makes them sound favorable to describe themselves, so focusing on it is pointless, and just comes off as arrogance. Focus instead on the actual things that "woke" represents—it hits much harder imo to read something like, for example, "it's crazy people say they're against healthcare being a human right and think that's like a good thing lol", than what I quoted above.
a few problems with this comment:
your issue isn't with "woke" your issue is with how conservatives use the word woke, literally the point of the OP
Reminder that woke was originally used as a positive term.
Also a reminder that woke is used negatively by the same people who cannot tell the difference between badly photoshopped letters and a gang tattoo.
Twas an obvious superimposition of letters to (likely) lie about the meaning of the tattoo, no?
Know MANY people saw:
[Below, As Undisclosed Photoshop]
After seeing pixels over years I saw:
Obviously the fact that you & 66 others just in this thread, and hundreds or thousands online are upset about the superimposition, indicate it was stupid/dishonest. Sigh what else is new w/current admin!
I think it's wild that the word 'woke' entirely replaced the selective outrage on the 2010s over "CRT," a bogyman that most white conservatives still cannot define.
That was depressing. I knew our president was dumb, but I still didn't think he could be that dumb.
No reminder needed for me, but for those who might want to do a deep dive:
I wince any time someone says something like "Wake up!", "Take the red pill!" etc.
It invariably means "Start believing the shite I believe"
Not really. It was just another fart sniffer word some groups liked to use.
What's amusing is that the Wikipedia article traces its origin back to the Republican Party.
Just saw the recent south park episode- absolutely killed. Poor Cartman is nothing withoutout the woke 😢
Saying a person is woke is like saying they are not a mindless sheep going through life asleep at the wheel.
Yeah seriously I'll never understand how it's an insult. Conservatives call having empathy "woke" and I'm like "yes, yes it is woke. Your point?".
it's basically everything you need to know about them
But they call people on the left sheep? How can this be true? /s
It's easier too. You don't gotta constantly be vigilant for the next way the woke industrial complex is trying to indoctrinate you. Because they won.
They go me already. We're doing unisex bathrooms? Ok then. Eighty new variants of pride flag just dropped yesterday? Well there's a lot of new colour combos I'll forget in 30 seconds but alright. Pronouns can be wholly silent, like the P in Pterodactyl? I cannot comprehend how that works but sure it literally will never affect me in a negative way.
Can we really reach MAGA racists with memes like this? Where’s the conversation about actually helping them awaken?
you go ahead and do that
After ten years of maga, and thirty or so years of watching R point in exactly this direction with every conservative policy or position, and every argument I ever had that included being called a "bleeding heart" or worse, I'm just here to wait for us to get it over with already, and then warm my hands on the smoldering wreckage of our nation that remains when Trump is done wrecking it.
Eventually I will die of old age while continuing to give no shits about maga or anything they have brought upon themselves while consigning the rest of us to the dystopian hell hole they cheered and voted for. The nation will still be recovering from Trump though, if we're lucky.
They've wrecked the lives of countless people with their slavish devotion to a candidate who embodies the worst of what US culture has ever had to offer. Some of those people are people I love and care about, but they are all people.
And on top of it all - they still have no objection to where things are headed until it affects them personally.
Fuck every last Trump voter. I'm very happy to let better, less jaded people than I am go the Andrew Johnson route. (not that I think it was a good idea the first time either) I don't need or want any maga in my life.
I'd offer to help you but I need to change my cat's litter.
I agree that wokeness is more enlightened than ignorance, but I also wonder how woke it is to scorn the less enlightened so hard.
I'm sure someone is somewhere grappling with that.
Since the politicians they support and voted in are actively dismantling the government, erecting a dictatorship, and enacting policies guaranteed to get people needlessly killed I don't find myself burdened by such concerns.
So conservatives version of this is their deweaponization of the word nazi? Fuck this timeline.
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Joseph Goebbels
The word Nazi was weaponised then overused against people who where not in fact Nazis. And now it no longer means anything. Congratulations you played yourself.
Waving your hands and saying "woke is not an insult" will not stop it from being used as an insult. But we can counter by using MAGA as an insult.
I'm fine with ignorants and some twats, but not both at once.
Was this meant to be a response to this thread by chance? 😅
That would be a good print for a t-shirt.
Many self described woke people are in fact ignorant fucking twats. One political outlook does not make u not an ignorant twat. You can be both. U can be neither. This is a false dichotomy. And ur attempt to put people in one of 2 boxes without acknowledging any sort of nuance around it clearly indicates the box you fall into.
Lemmy loves fallacies & circlejerks.
any person claiming to be woke is instantly not woke because that's not how the term works
The meaning of the word has changed to mean exactly those people. The right did that and they did it very effectively, and that's how the silent majority see it.
You could choose to be neither.
Participating in culture wars manufactured to drive social-media-engagement isn't obligatory.
Nope. One side are Nazis, dude. If you're not opposed to fascism, got some bad news for you...
Cool fallacy & us-them/with-us-or-against-us bias, bro.
Do we need our reading checked? Choosing neither (as they wrote) doesn't mean choosing fascism: it can still be opposed.
I guess the idea is that if you're spending all your energy being anti-MAGA then you aren't focussing on the real struggle (class warfare). But of course one can focus on class warfare while still being anti-MAGA.
Who've been the most successful opponents of fascists historically?
And who've lost their countries to fascists?
That's a shit argument that casts aside billions of human beings and their rights as such. And your follow-up is even more trolly? Fuck off.
Isn't woke used ironically? People who are 'woke' are not woke, but ignorant.
When did we decide that the worst people in the world get to decide what words mean
We didn't. Woke has gotten a bad name from online activity that mostly consists of self-congratulatory behavior & discussions that primarily reinforce their existing beliefs without fostering genuine debate, critical self-reflection, or engagement with diverse perspectives. Dogmatic self-righteousness of those online voices can often seem more focused on mutual validation & alienating others (for personal validation) than on winning people over (changing their minds) to achieve real change. It gives an impression of phony, performative activism for self-gratification that may make progressivism & good causes look fake & insincere.
Some people are arguably woke (in the older sense) enough to acknowledge faults & critically reflect on them.
It's just how linguistics works I guess.
Being woke means being aware of the societal injustices in the world. The opposite of sleeping on something
"Stay woke" means "keep paying attention"
Which is why it's hilarious when the right says they're anti-woke. Like a child who thinks the monster goes away if they cover their eyes
Isn't woke used ironically?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: nnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmnmmnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I don't recall seeing it used that way. What I have seen is:
Positive: being woke is being aware of social injustices
Negative: conservatives use it as a slur to mean anything positive that involves people who are not white men
Ironic: calling normal everyday things woke, like taking showers or wiping your ass
The term is a classic instance of "double speak". Twenty years ago, the running joke was of Libertarians calling anyone who still supported the idea of a federal government "Sheeple" and insisting that they needed to "Wake Up!" and come around to Ron Paul and Ayn Rand's point of view.
Ten years ago, "Woke" was a liberal term describing people who recognized the chronic threat of police brutality and state prosecutorial bias towards minorities.
Three years ago, the ultra-reactionary Houston pastor Ed Young launched a Church Awake campaign to counter what he believed was "Woke Culture" in the city.
The Atlantic's columnist thinks it is when you are obsessed with policing language. The ABC's columnists think it means being an educated black progressive. The Heritage Foundation thinks its when you manufacturer grevencies like checks notes the existence of slavery, I guess? The Kentucky AG thinks it means when transgender athletes are allowed to compete in high school sports.
What's it supposed to mean? Everything and nothing. It's a term of enlightenment and a pejorative seemingly both at once.
The meaning is actually pretty clear. Being "woke" means being aware of social injustice, specifically the systemic racism in US society. Being anti-woke simply means that you outwardly deny said systemic racism but in reality it means you're condoning it.
Everything and nothing.
It is in many ways a tribal signifier, and you're going to get different stories about what a tribe is like from its members and from its enemies. It's not that different from "Democrat" or "Republican" in that sense, although at least both Democrats and Republicans usually agree on who is a Democrat and who is a Republican.
"Drawing Bayesian inferences after extensive sampling, I've determined that it's 99-percent certain that anyone who uses 'woke' as pejorative will turn out to be a fuckhead. Please don't blame me for pointing this out—it's just science." — Mike Godwin
