Conservative MP Says He Trusts Porn Companies Won’t Leak Digital IDs of Canadians Who Visit Porn Websites::Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives voted to introduce digital IDs for porn users
I don't think the primary concern with things like this is the porn companies having access to that information (though it is of course a concern, especially given that no organization is immune to hacking), but rather that the government would have access to people's porn consumption habits, which presents both the same hacking risks but also the risk that some future government that decided to go after, say, LGBT people would have information that could potentially be used to identify those people at scale. Plus the risk that some unscrupulous member of government could use the information to blackmail critics or political rivals.
There's technically a warrant process required so you have to be operating on a reasonable proof of misconduct from an individual.
Realistically there are issues with Digital IDs. Like the ones that currently exist are for Service Canada websites and services so stuff like disability benefits, healthcare interfacing stuff, tax ans employment insurance related stuff. It's basically just supposed to be an extra encryption key that makes it easier for users and cuts out password issues... So it's basically just government encryption operating on government sites.
An authentication system requires both halves of an equation to have the program and so backwards engineering the whole thing is very possible by anyone working for the vendors. It opens vectors for nasty blackmail material if someone uses a digital ID to feign access to things. Even without the blackmail angle it can be dangerous...Like if someone posts illegal child porn before a moderation influence flags it someone who knows the system could clone your Digital ID to watch it and you could end up with the legal charges.
This is likely to just push people to go further underground to illicit sources for their porn. The ones that aren't legal businesses or platforms. Essentially it could end up meaning more audience and financial support for the illegal platforms and infrastructure who produce the stuff we desperately want to stop.

That's pretty hypothetical. Sure it's possible... but porn companies having the data is almost guaranteed to be bad news.
Some porn companies will sell the data to the highest bidder. And one of those bidders is going to be organise crime networks that will send an email threatening to share your viewing habits with your kids or your grandma - $1,000 and they'll delete the data - they promise. And then they'll be back six months later asking for $100k.
And the ones that won't sell it? They'll probably be targeted and compromised, with the same eventual outcome.
Someone needs to make a note to check back in with him when that leak does happen. Bonus points if the data leak includes some freaky things he is into.
Well yeah they probably won't, not intentionally, but it's still something that could be exploited or obtained through an attack. It's not like we've never seen a company get targeted by hackers before.
Of course, conservatives know this, they just don't give a flying fuck.
Why are the Democrats gunning for the moon while the Republicans don't even know that we just landed there again?
Republicans should sneak into the rocket next time. I heard it's a big as a bus and you can definitely sneak in when they turn off the cameras right before the 10 second countdown.
