League of Legends is a popular game that has a reputation for having toxic players, as well as requiring kernel-level anti-cheat, which is intrusive and so disliked here, and also does not work on Linux.
Thus, by switching to Linux, you can avoid the unwanted chance of playing League of Legends.

It means League of Legends is bad, but Doom is not.
League of Legends and other games by the same company require you to run an anti-cheat system that has more control over your computer than even you as an user can ever possibly get while windows is fully loaded. It basically controls windows itself - so all the tools that Linux has to run windows game are ineffective for these. It's like the game is running windows instead of the other way around.
The other point is that games like LoL tend to have a weird effect on people. It's not the case for everyone but most people I've met who play it, absolutely hate the game and feel miserable within minutes once they start playing - but they get cravings for it when they don't. So they keep going back to play more and get mad at it again every day.
At the same time, people who don't play those games and see the toxicity in it often meme about how the world would be better if it didn't exist.
So the OP text is similar to saying something like "there's no cocaine there" being a good selling point for living in some country.

Have you tried posting in the Linux community and having them tell you that it's your fault for closing the laptop in the first place, it's clearly that's an insane thing that no human should ever be doing?

This was honestly such a big selling factor for me and has been incredibly valuable and mentally healthy.

Telling me it runs, "League of Legends" is the best way to keep me away.

I know LoL is popular, but I also don't personally know anyone who plays it. And even if I did I wouldn't play League with them because I don't like the game. Not everyone is in the same boat.

- Is it? My buddy doesn't like Windows 11, but is into LoL and trying to decide on what he'll do. He has no issue using Linux and computers are his profession, but he likes playing that game
  I suspect he'll keep a rig just to play (or maybe dual-boot), but that's kinda cumbersome and wasteful for one game. Not sure what he'll end up doing, but it sucks that it's even an issue in this day and age. If it's a joke, it's a bad one cause there are plenty of people stuck in that type of situation (for various different reasons)
TL;DR - Linux is free, it's easy to use, works out of the box (when choosing a distro like Mint), and it can make your old-trusty computer work again. But I'm also too wordy, so...
Ehh, I think the point is that there's a lot of people who don't play "top games" on their pc, if any games at all (non-gamers/console gamers). A lot of people just need file management/storage, a browser, an office suite, and (oftentimes) an email client. Most everything else is done on a "smart phone" and a "streaming device/smart tv". And Linux has come a long way that those types of users wouldn't need to touch CLI any more than they would Powershell
The selling point is that it's free and it works, with (more recently) just a small learning curve... and you don't have to throw away a perfectly good computer because of "planned obsolescence". Hell, people switch between iPhones and Android all the time, just so the family is all on the same system. It's a small learning curve, but manageable for many people
If you feel like you would be alienated from playing games with friends because you use Linux, then that would put you in the other half of the population that don't want to switch. And honestly, is that any different than being "locked-in" with a console or phone? Even with cross-platform-play becoming more common, that still doesn't cover every "top game"
I'm really just saying that a large portion of people don't have an interest in gaming like that. They maybe have a console, a steam deck, or don't game, and their "home computer" is for personal computing
Now Adobe and AutoCad are another issue when it comes to "business computing" and a harder sell (even though there's good alternatives). But a vast majority of home users just need a computer that works, and they don't have the money to suddenly buy a new pc that's "compatible with Microsoft". Just give them a free OS that they can click around and figure out, and they'll probably want to keep their current pc if they can. One of the hardest things is teaching people "how to install a new OS" and how easy it can be, instead of just "updating" or buying a whole new device
Conspiracy time: Companies are trying to lock people into proprietary software and move home-computing to their phone, so that the average user's overall computing power is diminished and monitorable (plus the profit incentive). Easily controlled and exploited. "Free and open = Viruses and incompatibility... stick with what you know/trust and 'keep your information safe with us'"
If you're a pc gamer or power-user, you're probably already going to be acquainted with your hardware and use an OS that suits those needs. But most users are just browsing the internet and editing/storing files

I am dual booting Linux Mint and Windows 10 on my desktop PC, what's keeping me from switching completely is Lossless Scaling... I didn't find a similarly hassle-free and functional alternative that would run on Linux

EDIT: Oh, and it's a huge pain comparatively to overclock my display from 60 to 96 Hz. In Windows it's a matter of running an executable every time my display driver updates. I gave up and I just boot to Windows anytime I want to take advantage of the higher frequency (which is a lot)

Rather than a program not running being a negative outcome for the user, this is suggesting everyone would see this as a net positive experience that you are unable to run League of Legends in Linux, and that people will flock to Linux upon this discovery

As someone who uses Linux on multiple personal machines even I’m finding it cringe.
Like guys calm down you’re hurting the brand.
So you have no good reason to stick with windows or Mac, and you think you'd benefit from switching to Linux, but there's too many people who are annoying about Linux so you don't switch?

- Imagine going to a pizzeria. You've heard great things about it, how tasty it is and how cheap it is. Now once you get in there, there are a ton of people who don't work there, but are telling you that the burger place down the road is bad because they are expensive and lack options. But everyone you know goes to this burger place. So you decide that a pizza is in order, but all these people are yelling and screaming about how their crust type is the best, and then you have people listing every single topping combination and the benefits of each, but nobody has a consensus on any of it. Only then will you realize that they are all waiting for their own pizza order. And once you actually get to the counter, there is no menu board and you are expected to just order a pizza. The voices of what is the better pizza are drowning out your thoughts on what you actually need, so you leave and get back in line for the same burger every other person is ordering. Maybe I can add cheese, but it's still the same cheese. That is what the Linux community is like.

If we're to have a serious conversation on this for a second - my view is that I don't push people towards the lifestyle choices I've picked (veganism, Linux, meditation, etc.) but if it seems the person is already open to something I do, I'm happy to answer their questions in a non judgemental manner and be a resource for them.

I'm truthful in what I say, and I will just as easily tell them the bad things (no Photoshop, learning curve, you may find yourself running commands sometimes) as well as the good things so they can make an informed decision.

I've had one friend move over to Linux Mint on his laptop because he saw I was already using it and realised it's actually doable, and another friend start considering vegetarianism more seriously

Seriously, I don't preach veganism to anyone around me. When people ask why I'm vegan, I answer, straight to the point. If they ask more questions, I just continue answering their questions.
I know at least of 2 people I have known personally who became vegan later. I never preached to them.
I'm not aware of anyone who switched to Linux or an ergonomic keyboard layout though, so results may vary.

I'm with you on two out of three, but I respect your choice to be a vegan. When you say no Photoshop, you're right - but there are acceptable tools available that can read and write PSD files; and there are some decent graphics tools. The learning curve is easier with more derived OSes like Mint, Kali, or PopOS.
While they might find themselves running command line stuff sometimes, I think anyone who's looking at moving to Linux from Windows should have a vague knowledge of a command prompt or Powershell. If they don't, that's actually where I'd start - teach them the uncomfortable thing (command line) in a comfortable setting (Windows). Have them install from winget, chocolatey, or something like that. Teach them to set up a virtual machine. If they can do those two things, they're 90% of the way to daily-driving Linux.

You do have options. You could run Windows 11 Enterprise IoT edition, which is Windows 11 with lower hardware requirements and significantly less bloat. Or, you could switch to Linux and run Windows in a virtual machine for those edge cases where only Windows will do.

I really should be switching to linux, but I only turn my laptop on like once a month and I'm sure I'd forget all the Linux things in-between those occasions..
Also, does anyone know whether linux can run PHPStorm? That's like the only program I need on there

I've always had a better time running jetbrains ides on linux than I've had on windows so yeah, there won't be any issue with that at all.
Many developers use Linux, so Jetbrains makes sure all their IDEs work on it.
I'm pretty sure in general there are more development tools that don't work on windows (or only work through WSL, which is Linux), than development tools that don't work on Linux.

I have used JetBrains software for years on Linux with no issues.
Mostly used IntelliJ, but they all seem to be built on a common base so I think it should be no problems.

I keep an org-mode file of all the useful commands, configs, and settings. and bash automatically keeps a history of all your commands anyway.

I've almost fully moved over to a Linux Mint on a dual boot system but I need Virtual desktop for the Meta Quest and that only works on Microshit.

I've been using virtualbox and a Windows 10 VM. Easy to set up, if not a bit slow.

Monado + WiVRn is what I use, when using ny quest while traveling. Works reasonably well :)
Might need to swap the compositor between Xrizer (default now) and OpenComposite for some games or functionality.
I've used ALVR to play Underdogs on my Pico 4 on Linux. It can be a bit flakey getting it running though.
