I think people prefer the one everyone is at. Makes sense. For social media, what matter most is social capital. People only migrate when they feel that the majority will migrate. Some are more sensitive and migrate sooner. But never when there isn’t a trend.
I just had to install it for an upcoming trip to South America. Everyone seems to use it, even for business. It's basically the only time I've ever used it.
In my area it's aged out. People that use CL are either scammers or trying to make a quick buck, as opposed to the FB marketplace which has both of those PLUS people who just want to get rid of shit and have no idea of the value or don't care about the value of their items.
I'm right now downloading all my pictures so I can delete my Facebook and Instagram accounts... 1) I'm transitioning so it seems like a good time to disconnect myself from all the embarrassing photos of me as a teenager and 2) Facebook is just full of utter garbage these days anyway.
Facebook is still where nearly everyone is though. Your feed is what you make of it. They have a feeds section in your tabs that only shows your friend's posts in chronological order.
Congrats on your transition btw. I'm happy for you!
I have an Instagram, by which that means it's been abandoned but not deleted (was created by pressure from an ex anyway) Otherwise nah, I don't use any of them. They just don't really provide anything I want or care about.
Whatsapp is ubiquitous in my country, so while I try to use Signal with as many people as I can, I do use Whatsapp at least every couple days.
Never had Instagram or Threads. I have an inactive facebook account.
Actually checked my Facebook feed recently out of curiosity. It's amazing how dead it is these days. I could scroll for ages and none of the posts were from people on my friends list, or even pages I liked. Everything was just generic shit.
It's the exact opposite for me. All my friends are on there and people posting all the time in my local community. The groups are always popping as well. I feel like they've gotten even more popular lately since the reddit fallout.
I have not had a FB account since 2015. Just decided to delete it one day and never returned. Never had an insta. And definitely not signing up for threads.
I never did. In my 25 years of using and working with computers, my only social media accounts where Twitter (deleted since 5 years), reddit (deleted) and now the fediverse.
And I never give people my private mobile number if I know that they use meta apps
No. They're a privacy disaster. They foster misinformation, hatred, and violence. They have repeatedly lied to the public, national governments, and even their shareholders. A lot of my friends and family still use them heavily, but I refuse to deal with them anymore.
No, not at all. That said, I also don't use anything by Apple, I have to use Microsoft Teams but I do that in Firefox, and while I use Android it is a custom ROM, so the lack of Meta is not surprising.
I stopped using Facebook in like 2008 but for work reasons, I have a Facebook account called “[My first name] Dev Account” and the profile picture is “I do not use Facebook” in like 8 languages. People tag it in photos.
I have FB only because I have friends who communicate primarily through messenger. They have shit cell signal where they live, so they use messenger on wifi. I told them they have different options, but they like messenger so whatever lol. I'll deal with it because I love the fools and enjoy their company lol.
I check facebitch every once in a while, but I never post. Last status update was like 6 years ago. I have an Instagram too, but log in maybe once every 6 months. I honestly don't see the allure of it since they started selling all our data, I felt no need to give them anything to sell.
There are a couple of people in my life who prefer to communicate via WhatsApp, and my immediate family has a group chat in Messenger. Other than that, nope.
I check Facebook about quarterly for messages from people who don't know I don't use that platform. That's literally the only reason I keep my account active. I also have all notifications turned off and don't have the phone app, so if someone contacts me on there that I'm not expecting, they'll be waiting a while to hear back.
Seems like we're outliers here 😄 I keep it for those acquaintances who aren't important enough to merit texting directly, but still might want to message me on messenger every now and again. Check in with it once every couple of months and see if anyone messaged me, scroll through the feed, get annoyed at all the "memes" and then exit.
There's a new extremely annoying trend where a post at a "local" company says "hey we need to offload this expensive item, type @highlight in the chat to enter" which ends up pinging your entire friends list. Very annoying, super scummy.
Never had an Insta or Threads. Haven't touched my Facebook in almost 12 years, the last time I logged in was to send a message to my wife back when we were long-distance dating.
I don't use any Meta products and I've deleted any accounts I had on them. This includes the ones mentioned, Oculus (I have the CV1 headset but wouldn't be able to use it that easily anyway due to switching to Linux) and WhatsApp.
WhatsApp with close family Facebook for distant family, neighborhood hoa, and things i like to follow like animal shelters.
I made an Instagram years ago but never used it and deleted it when i switched from r/ to lemmy. One funny thing - Facebook has the wrong birthdate for me. It used to be correct and now it's not. Could it have picked it up when i entered a fake birthdate on a cannabis or alcohol website??
I use Facebook for a few nonprofit pages I run. Its main perk is events organization. I also use Instagram for my nonprofits as well -- it's easy(ish) to cross post on both platforms while still respecting the individual audiences who consume content on each.
I am forced to use instagram, because that's all anyone my age uses to communicate. I'm in the process of setting up matrix bridge so that I can be done with that app.
I used to for communicating with friends. I felt I was starting to become addicted to doomscrolling, basically said "screw this, message me on Matrix", and deleted my accounts. Two of the lot actually made an account, and nobody except me actually uses it. So be it, then. I care more about my privacy than having people to talk to.
I'm still on Facebook to keep up with family I don't want having my phone number. I'm on Insta to support friends who's business is kind of tied to it (tattooers and other artists mostly). I'm on Threads because my work requires me to be in there (and elsewhere) to promote their stuff. I don't actually do that, but apparently once you have an account it's there forever unless you want to nuke your Instagram account as well.
I've receeded from FB and Insta (along with Twitter {"X"} and Reddit) as well as being fully adverse to posting on Threads in favor of Fediverse alternatives. Been on Mastodon since the 2021 Facebook whistleblower and Lemmy since Reddit's API BS last year. Haven't tried BlueSky or the other Twitter alternatives. Now... getting away from using Google/Alphabet has been another struggle entirely.
Cancelled in 2016 or so and never looked back. Now I look at people with a face filled with shock when I hear that they still use Facebook. Usually it's "oh but the marketplace" or "oh but the events".
Mostly because it is the only Meta product I use daily. Facebook might be used once in a blue moon just so I can try and contact my best bud if I don't see him log into Steam in a while.
Even more curious as to if anyone here regularly does work in VR with the thing or has meetings in Horizon Worlds. I find this idea amusing thinking how a boring ass office meeting could be made a little more fun if everyone is some random cartoon character or dinosaur or 3D geometric shape.
I still have to use WhatsApp for my international family. That is what they use. My mom also still uses Facebook Messenger and won't move to something else. I think it is because she uses it on her tablet and WhatsApp won't work on it. I tried getting everyone to move to Signal but I was very lonely on that hill. I have FB account but I rarely every check it (once in every six months or so). I got off in 2018 after I felt so angry over something political in the US and realized that FB was making me angry on purpose to get clicks. I never had Instagram. Got into Pixelfed and I'm enjoying it a lot (perhaps because I have no prior benchmark with Instagram).
I've been quite concerned with Meta since I read "The Chaos Machine" by Max Fischer which goes into detail about how FB was heavily responsible for the ethnic cleansing of the Rohyinga in Burma.
I once read a series of articles where someone gave up using one of the big five tech companies (Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) for one week each. It was interesting how hard it was do with some. Facebook and Apple were the easiest but Amazon was nearly impossible because of AWS. I've concluded that for me, I can minimize my Facebook, Google, and Amazon use as much possible but in the end, just have to live with Microsoft and to a much lesser extent Apple for time being. But to each their own.
I have an instagram account for a website I have. I also have a personal account (with nothing posted) to attempt to keep up with social and local events. It's mostly pointless though because the algorithm shows me stuff from three or four days ago, not things that are posted chronologically, or today.
Yes for Instagram, but I don't follow people, mostly hastags (squirrels, dogs, name it) and some pages like National Geographic, NASA, etc. for beautiful pictures.
Deleted my Facebook account twelve years ago. I recently got an Instagram account under a fake name and with a spare email purely to exchange memes and funny videos with my girlfriend, but beyond that I avoid anything made by that company. Especially their hardware. Anything Meta Quest exclusive doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned.
PSA: beffore you set your account to be deleted, deactivate it.
It takes meta 30 days to delete your account and this resets if you log back in. To avoid friends and strangers from messaging you or interacting with your dying account during those 30 days,, it's a good idea to deactivate it. This way you diss spear from Facebook immediately and people start messaging you over other methods
I use Facebook to keep updated on some friends/family that use it as well as updates within my hoa community. Find it's way better then nextdoor for that.
Instagram I hardly use, maybe check once a week and threads used it one day and stopped
Uninstalled Facebook, Instagram, never had access to Threads in my country. Can't live without Messenger though, unfortunately. Wish I could get at least some friends on board...
Messenger because all my family and relatives are on it for 10+ years.
Facebook for marketplace (really big here, mostly the only place to buy/sell stuffs) and also FB for some groups like astronomy, etc. But I don't post on FB nor scroll it.
WhatsApp but I opted out of the data sharing stuff before they managed to lock me into it. I have a Facebook account that gets used a few times a years. None of the other ones.
Still ? I never have. I did have a twitter account but I only posted 3 times in 5 years, it wa for following clinate science experts. I left it altogether once there was enough of them on Mastodon. Reddit was about it, now ActiviyPub only.
Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, every day because all my contacts are there. My Insta account is almost deleted, but I still have things saved there. And Threads, not touching that with a 10ft pole
I was never really active on Instagram or threads. I do still use Facebook as I have a number of friends who are on there who aren't on any other social media (and also, neither am I really). But my usage has dropped a lot since they've made the mobile client so horrible. Ever since they kneecapped Most Recent I refuse to be at the mercy of their algorithm. So I really only view it on desktop.
I have only used Facebook for it's messenger as many of the people I know can only be contacted there.
Outside of that I'll occasionally look at my mother's picture albums as the bitch has over 7,000 images posted and some of them are of me throughout my life so I'll look to show people certain things.
